Compounding their profitability problems is the fact that warranty costs are eating them alive, and that's compounded by their broken-down supply chain.

To quote the Count of Monte Cristo in explaining economics “dig first money later”

It’s not just “their” problem it’s the entire global manufacturing industry. Let’s not forget the tablet and laptop problems affected by the chip shortages as well. Most updated recall notice to hit my news feed was for a park outside warning from Kia and Hyundai 2 days ago.

Recalls are hitting weekly for damn near everyone mostly if you really dig are from outsourced parts. And it’s far from eating them alive in profits. If you’re not in the motor city you really don’t hear it on the news much but profit shares paid out this year hadn’t been that high since the 2017 pay out year from the 2016 profit year. If you’re not in the automotive production industry there’s so much behind the scenes that you just don’t see or hear about as it’s just another day at work. Hell how many set backs did I have to listen to growing up from my parents in the computer based training world for Bank of America which was hysterical when my dad was a contractor and my mom was his boss. Snags are just another day at the office no matter what work you do.

Luckily they have ICE to support the transition. They sold 96k EVs in 2022. With a (-40.6%) margin per unit.

Long way to go.

To be honest I applaud Ford's transparency. Lets see GM do the same. GM continues to make promises, that they are going to be the EV giant. Mary Barra has said multiple times GM would be selling more EVs than Tesla by 2025(laughable claim). Instead they have had multiple EV production goals pushed back. Now a breakup with LG over battery production. Cancellation of a planned 4th battery plant with LG. Now rumors of switching to cylindrical cells.

i think everyone expects to lose in a new segment for some amount of time...

the 2 questions are for how long and is this time frame sustainable in order to bring EVs to the masses as has been promised?

It took Tesla 15 years to make solid profits on EVs and this is after they almost went bankrupt 3x and with massive govt backing...

So I think there is a lot of stuff happening with this messy transition that we just aren't seeing.

Extremely true, and very well said. I’ll add to that. The only reason why tesla exists and made it through the first 15 years is because all of the massive massive massive federal subsidies. Fact
