Lightbulb Next Gen (G65) X5 / iX5, (G66) X6 / iX6, (G67) X7 / iX7 Info. Entry XM to use B58

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
From recent update in the future models thread:

Current G05 X5 / G06 X6 / G07 X7 will be succeeded by:

G65 X5 and iX5
G66 X6 and iX6
G67 X7 and iX7

These will be CLAR based cars, not Neue Classes, and as such their EV versions will still share the hardware with ICE and hybrid models just like i4 and i7 do today.

The entry level XM will use hybrid B58 from G70 750e.

2024 X5 LCI will still be based on the same G05 CLAR right?
I wonder why the first letter of the code name is not changing for all of these. Not significant enough change? Platform change sounds like one..

Update:
Misread this -- so no platform change on the next one might be the reason?

Ironic, they don't even use the N74 anymore. It's a ibt of a bummer if you ask me, that engine should have been hybrid for the new 7 Series, oh well, limo's with their signature engines are now gone.
A8 W12 - canceled
S65 AMG - discontinued
M760i/M760Li - replaced with i7 M70/M760e.

Surprised the new X cars will be CLAR and not NK - I can only guess they want extra time to make sure their top-selling SUVs get the 2nd-gen/not launch NK chassis?

The entry level XM using the B58? The XM weight is close 2.7 metric tons (5,952 lbs), it's going to be way under powered and slowly accelerate like the big yacht it is.

Since when is anything with 400hp underpowered?

My wife's Volvo XC90 is 4500 lbs and it's 300 hp inline 4 is more than enough to get it moving fast.

I know from 1st hand experience with my current X5M comp that these big SUV/SAC's need a big V8 to get moving. Thus the S68 is required for the XM, not the B58 (unless it's a typo and should be S58).

The difference is, this is a B58 paired with an electric motor. There's two different versions, one with 480hp and one with 560. My understanding is the 560hp tune is reserved for "M50e" cars over the 480hp "50e". I assume the XM will get the 560hp variant, as it is a full-blown M car by name.

It would be nice to see an S58 here, but I wonder if BMW is trying to phase out the S58 due to the efficiency and emissions deficit compared to the B58. I wouldn't be surprised if the next-gen X3M used the 560hp B58 hybrid configuration in place of an updated S58. Unsure if the next M3 will even have an ICE.

Don't forget that with mild-hybrid systems, the torque from the electric portion is usually instantly noticeable and useable. Great on lighter cars and necessary on most SUVs.

Off topic…but I disagree on the Volvo comment (we had the XC90 and the X5 at the same time).

I think the XC90 is underpowered for highway acceleration. I guess it's fine for cruising at highway speeds (but it takes a lot less power to keep anything in motion).

Also, the fuel consumption is terrible for how small that engine is. Our G05 X5 was significantly faster, and more fuel efficient…

I just think 300hp from BMW is different than Volvo.

And back to our regularly scheduled programming!

Key words here are "entry level" so I'm not going to panic yet.

I'm guessing (maybe it's fact idk) that on the CLAR platform the next generation X5M/X6M/X7M will use the same S68 Hybrid going in the next generation M5/M5T.

Hopefully this translates down the CLAR platform and the next generation X3M/X4M keeps the S58 with some mild hybrid tech.

Neue Classes platform on next generation 3/4 series in 2025 so I doubt the next generation M3/M4 will have the S58. Probably going to be a S48(?) 4 banger with a pair of electric motors. However BMW slices it, it's going to be @600HP.

IMO It's the beginning of the end for ICE but the end won't be here for another 15 years. Regardless, sad to witness.

Not sure if it's a good or bad thing and is it worth upgrading.

The current x7 just got an LCI and will be in production until 2027. So I can get an iX7 in 5,5-6 years from today. That's too far. Need something to replace my iX in 2,5 years.

Completely agree. I dumped our XC90 because I got tired of the lackluster acceleration. Nice car otherwise.

Why is there an entry level XM to begin with? I was under the impression BMW wanted to compete with the big boys, Urus, DBX, Ferrari Purosangue, with this car. The only car I can think of that sort of has a similar framework is the Mercedes G series with the G63 and the G550, and the base 550 has 416 hp. I don't know, just seems really odd. But then again, BMW as of late has me questioning a lot of their decisions.

The 750e is supposed to make 480hp, about 60 more that the G550. So I think it's safe to say that even the base XM will be pretty quick. If it gets the high-tune B58 hybrid rumored to make 560hp (which will be in the G60 M550i), even better.

They don't need it,...the 4.4 (N63) can make just as much power,...and be a better pkg! The N74 was just BMW 'flex'n'!

With any luck, this will trickle down to the CLAR platform, and the upcoming X3M/X4M models will continue to use the S58 and other mild hybrid technology. The XC90 lacks the necessary power for quick motorway starts, in my opinion. I suppose it's good for highway speeds, but maintaining motion requires a lot less effort.
