So
1. head cover for the valves - leaking oil.
2. Vaccum pump needs replacement - ?did they even check it?
3. Turbo cold air intake cracked - needs replacement.
4. coolant reservoir is cracked aswell but tiny dent on the top not leaking anything - obviously trying to rip me.

anyone had so many issues with a 4 year old car????

Unbelievable
F20 - 118i (2013).

o2 sensor replaced last week. This is the only problem i have since owning the car.

Mine wasn't a recall issue so I can't comment, sorry. But I do have the dynamic steering rack, hence the expensive repair.

In my case no fault was noticed as such just wear and tear, although I have lowered the car with springs from Birds which may have contributed to that.

I'm about to go full-on Birds B1 with the additional Bilstein dampers as the original stock damps are now worn out too.

Hi all,

Didn't want to open a new thread.
The problem I start having is that car is stalling/shaking while decelerating when it is cold. It is not like a knock. Just the engine goes up to 1200 rpm and down to 900 rpm constantly until I completely stop or accelerate. the feeling is like the brake pads are all worn out and car is going to slip under your feet.
After a few minutes of driving, all goes back to normal. spark-plugs are replaced 4 months ago along with all brake pads.
My wild guess is that it might be related to fuel, fuel pump or ignition coils. or could it be chronical turbo problem on n13 engines=
Has anyone experienced the same issue?

I guess it is an automatic since it can rev up while you are decelerating? I would guess gearbox issues or throttle position sensor.

Hi,

As far as I know, the 118i F20 has an additional oil cooler when compared to the less powerful 114i and 116i. I've heard some people run into excessively high oil temperatures (higher than recommended by BMW) when remapping the 114i/116i up to 220hp on stage 1. Is this true? Is this the only difference between the engines in 114i, 116i and 118i other than a different ECU map?

Thanks

problem appeared to be well known turbo o-ring, v-belt (or alternator belt whatever you call it) issues on N13 engines. replacing both solved the issue.
If you ever face with low coolant indicator or full engine power not available warning messages on an N13 car, it is probably related to that.

the differences between 118i @170 hp and other variants of that engine are

-Heat exchanger (balances oil temp)
-Exhaust diameter (2.5" on 170-177hp versions , 2.0" on rest)
-ECU map

Recently, I have also heard that different materials/alloys are used for the internals of the engine, like the piston, etc...
Does anyone know how different they are?

I heard that regarding PSA version of the joint project Prince engine (the top Peugeot RCZ 200 bhp, in particular?). Rumours. You can compare part numbers. Here, for instance: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select. I recall somebody shared (on a local forum) he had done this and the list provided above should be complete. FWIW

Pistons have the same code between 116i and 118i. Also injectors and HPFP.

However 116i turbo has a different code from the 118i, but same as 114i. Weight is slightly different at ~70g. Any idea about this ? Is it actually a different turbo, or maybe just some different minor parts (orings, manifolds etc.) ?

118i

Edit: I have searched for both codes from BMW, 11627643719 and 11627643717, and they appear on specifications for the same turbo (here, here or here), Garrett Turbo P/N: 819997-5001S GT15, Model MGT1549ZDL. So maybe the same basic part after all ? Does anyone know more ?

I saw on a russian board that apparently some 116i have smaller turbos, although they are supposedly very few. Does anyone know about this ? Maybe someone from Russia could translate the important parts:

Also maybe this should be moved to a separate thread.

Don't underestimate Google (many languages to choose, by the way). You can use it to translate sentences/texts rather than only words. The quality is, of course, very unstable (from amazing to crappy), depending on the input sentence structure. They discard the appropriate wording context completely as well , so it's not safe to use for communication (I recall a recent review/complaint of their app translating "an exciting gift" formal compliment as "a horny gift" ) but it should retrieve the overall meaning (provided you would get it from the initial message even if native ) most often. Try the languages you know.

Most definitely, this is an off-topic here. Start a dedicated thread and quote the appropriate posts there. It's unlikely a moderator would move posts or even start a thread for you. I guess I saw (severe) off-topics deleted only.

I started a new thread about 116i vs 118i differences here.

So back ontopic, is looks like the 1.6 N13 engine is relatively trouble free, aside from some gaskets, hoses and sensors which have to be replaced after a while ?

My 2013 116i F20 with only 40k km: trunk lock, coil and recently a fuel tank failure! Not what I would consider as reliable car...

Same here.
F20 116i 2013 manual with 61K (km).
Took it for service last week and was told:

1. gasket oil sweat. (not so serious in my opinion).
2. Vaccum pump needs replacement (because of oil sweat - not leaking).
3. Turbo cold air intake cracked - needs replacement.

Looks like the N13 engine suffers from the same issues. decided to replace the intake pipe and that's it.
Will check the oil-sweat and will decide in the future.

Turbocharger Feed Inlet Pipe

N13 engine 118i - 170hp (2013) 130.000 km. Turbo Coolant pipes had to be replaced. They were leaking coolant 1.2L at 1000km. parts 11537600592 and 11537600591 Turbocharger Feed Inlet Pipe at least 4 hours of work to replace them. Still very happy with the car drives great

I have a F20 116i and have to replace the oil seals on the intake and feed pipes to the turbo. Is this a common issue? Would I need to remove the turbo to replace these seals?

Ive had this same issue and its caused my engine to feel sluggish, it has put my car into "limp mode" claiming the drivetrain is to blame. ive been told to get a new turbo inlet elbow. im assuming my car may have been running too much boost

Slightly off topic, since our car has only 35 000 km, but we had an interesting fault. The B38 engine was cutting out under power. Typically over 50 percent load, and it cut all the power briefly, sometimes repeatedly. Usually no error messages.

Solution: New coils and spark plugs.

Otherwise the car has been completely free from issues 5.5 years now.

2013
116i n13
137k (km)

-Coolant pipe (at the rear of the engine), we have to remove gearbox to change that, we also did clutch.
-Water pump leaking
-Noisy electric actuator of the coolant pump (like the noise of the waste-gate when cold)
-Random misfire under load (around 3k rpm and uphill). Still trying to do a diagnose. At 120k km I changed 4 plugs and 4 coils because 1 coil was bad. Maybe there is another bad coil, idk. No DTC, just trying to find something doing logs of knock sensors...

If you know and like to work in your car, it's not so bad. I think that it's a lot of work for just a 1.6l, and I still haven't replaced timing chain or valve seals (no oil consumption, just 1l/10.000km). But it's a good option if you want a powerful (with remap), fun (rwd) and relatively modern car.
