In BMWs defense, you just hopped out of a Hummer lol. In all seriousness through, I have a Camaro SS 1LE and that alpha chassis is really good!

Well really it was August 2012 when I and BMW N.A. discovered the E90 CBS (for the N52 at least) goes defunct for oil change notifications after 186,000 miles. I had an loaner F30 335i for a whole week and sadly discovered BMW lost the 3-series DNA somewhere. This was just a week after I had the ATS 2.0L Performance package as a loaner from GM. So actually I had just hopped out of a BMW. Both cars were automatic and I had both on my daily commute for several days each. The ATS is a far better driving car. The ATS was so enjoyable that the next time the Hummer went in for a insurance repair of the wheel speed sensor harness (rat gnawed on it) I asked for an ATS loaner, which I was paying for. Roundel-hounds just can't deal with the fact that the ATS is the current real 3-series for sale in the marketplace.

You'd actually be surprised how well the Hummer H3T drives too. It's on-road manners are pretty tied down for a 32-inch tired off-road vehicle. It's got great ground clearance while keeping the driver's seat height at ass level so you need not climb up a mile to get into it. The steering is accurate and nicely weighted. The brakes aren't the best but they are big twin-piston calipers at least. The trans is an automatic, so it sucks by definition.

I've yet to drive the Alpha-chassis Camaro, but I have one built on Chevy's website. A 2LT 3.6L, manual trans, RS package, performance enthusiasts package, and brake and cooling package. Damned nice car on paper for $37K. I plan on taking a Camaro out soon for a test drive.

If Cadillac offered the ATS with a manual trans mated to the 3.6L I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I'd bet that SS is nice.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Friend was telling me when they took their X6 in for a non-warranty cosmetic repair, for the loaner BMW dealership charged on the credit card $500 (hold) gave friend a receipt and then refunded when the car was returned - does that sound plausible ?

I got charged $250 hold as well.

She told me a few people did some pretty significant damage to the cars and going through insurance was a hassle.

Yes I think they put something like a $350 hold on my card and then release it when I return the car and it passes inspection. The car actually had some dings that they didn't record on the initial inspection but they didn't see it when I brought it back either. They also charge you for any fuel you use, so you're supposed to bring it back at the same level, of course filling up at Arco with 89 octane is cheaper than their inflated price.

I'm in an x4 right now, mostly have had 320 or 328, once an x3. Backing into the garage last night provoked enough electronic alarms to sound like a patient coding in the ICU. All of them left me glad to get back to my 2er, but it is fun to play w/ the electronic gizmos and the moonroof - and it reminds me that I really don't care enough about that stuff to want it all the time. And it reinforces how very much better true winter tires are, vs. the all seasons these ride on.

Best loaner I got was a Grey '16 X5 X-drive35i with M-sport.

The last loaner I got was a 230i which instantly made me appreciate my F10.

My last loaner was a G30 540i. It was very nice. I almost prefer the 320i's...they make me love my car more. It was hard to give the 540 back.

BMW Seattle with the 135is a few years ago. Truly an intoxicating car to drive. I couldn't contain myself, I'm lucky I didn't end up in jail during those couple days.

They've also given me a 328 convertible once, that too during the rare warm and sunny months we get here. What an enjoyable experience. I'd like my next car to be a 'vert.

Disappointing loaners...F30 320. What a hunk of crap, true shame to the BMW name. Lack of power wasn't so much an issue as the rest of the driving experience. The outgoing X3 was pretty crappy to drive too! I know BMW can do better with SUVs, my folks have an E70 X5M sport which is stiff and a hoot to drive.

Once my dealer ran out of loaner cars and I had to get an ATS...

Was not expecting how fun that was to drive. It was just the 2.0, but boy did it handle amazingly and had nice tight steering. It wasn't quite the E90, but it's the closest thing to it as BMW unfortunately does not make a car that steers like the E90 anymore.

In typical GM fashion, the rest of it was disappointing. There were a fair number of GM parts bin interior components, hard plastics, etc. Add its questionable reliability and likely class-worst residual values and you have a poor buying proposition.

My best loaner was a fully loaded G30 530i M sport. It was such a nice and comfortable car.

Sounds like a magazine review. I didn't find anything disappointing, well maybe the dash lights don't dim enough for my taste. The driving position is great, viability is as good as most cars, brakes are spot on, steering is about perfect. You can complain about CUE, but I find idrive distracting and annoying too.

Not sure the reliability is any worse than a modern BMW.

Nah there's definitely a difference between the ATS and the best sellers of the segment. The ATS isn't as good an all-rounder as the 3er and not even close to the A4 or C-class.

There's a reason why the ATS is one of the worst selling vehicles in America. Dealers can't move them to save their lives. For your purposes it's fine (just as my Lexus IS is fine for my purposes) but that's clearly not the case for most consumers.
