interior map lights

Food for thought....

My Sport hasn't got interior reading lights, just one big light for the front and one in the middle of the headlining.

What are people's thoughts on whether its something that can be fitted easily, if I get a maplight type cluster from the parts dept?

Does anyone know how easy it is to remove the fitment (its not in the manual which makes me worry its a dealer only job)?

Also what pack comes with the reading lights, is that a component of the extended lighting pack?

I was looking at this myself as this was one of the only options that i wanted and didnt take.

It was a stupid amount of money for the option. If you order the SE/Urban or sport its £650 for the interior comfort pack.

On the M Sport model they still want £350 for it even tho the automatic climate control is standard. So thats £90 for the extended storage and £240 for some lights?

Ive been looking on real OEM and the rear light cluster with ambient lighting is about £35ish and the front about £65ish.

The mirror illuminators are £4 each.

I can't see the wiring being any different for the map lights. I was going to wait till i got mine and give the back lights a punt.

At best its plug and play and im £140 better off , at worst its a few hours with a soildering iron.

Light package will also give up the led light at the door handle for both inside and outside

I explicitly ordered the ext. light package, because I think just the interior light when its dark improves the quality feeling by so much, that its worth the 230€ it is over here. Map lights and illuminated door handles are just a bonus.

Just had me worried as I have not specifically ordered a lights package. Checked my config and it says they are standard.

So, is it possible to retrofit the extended light package! Inside and door handles?

Strangely enough, with Urban the interior part of extended lighting (B-pillars, centre console, footwells) is included, but not the LEDs on the outside door handles...

Didn't know there is lighting on the B-Pillars - whereabouts does it go?

right, i decided to be a big man and take a spoon to my new 1er... i gently eased my two headlining lights out of their holes. I took some photos to illustrate what I did - but apologies for the quality as I did it with my phone.

Note: I do not have reading lights in front or back and do not have ambient in the back (only in the front).

Here's the back light [no reading, no ambient]:

Note the unusual second connector leading to a small PCB. I'm not sure of the function of this PCB, it is plastic-welded to the lens cavity. The other connector leads directly to the bulbholder.

Here's the front light [no reading, yes ambient]:

Note the large connector array - 9 wires total. the connector has 3 blank spaces though where a potential additional 3 wires may sit - I hope these are not for the reading lights because it would mean that it is not just a case of a direct swap reading light unit for non-reading-light unit.

I do plan to change these, if it is possible to do so, with the reading and rear ambient versions, and if I do I will put a guide up in the guide forum

By the way - if you are going to attempt this yourself - the silver metal clips holding in the lights tend to spring off and land inside the headlining. I ended up using a fridge magnet stuck to a spoon to get one of them out - I can't tell you how much I was panicking!!!

A thought - can anyone with the rear ambient and front map reading lights pls help me out?

I need to know if your connectors are the same as mine above - 9 wires in the front and 2 x 2 wires in the back (2 separate connectors each with 2 wires).

I think the sunroof switch is on the other part of the overhead cluster ie. where the airbag light is, which isn't the bit i removed.

I just opened the rear non-ambient light unit and there appears to be two SMD LEDs in there:

I plugged it into the car with the lens cap off and can't get them to come on, so I'm guessing since they are wired up, it must need to be coded to the system. So not just a straight swap - sucks

The led lights should work!

There is some in the front and rear cluster.

They only come on when you open the car from the car being locked but as soon as you open the door they go off.

They also come on if the car is already locked and you press the lock button.

Ah kool,

Thats good, Im glad the car has these leds as i actually wanted the interior map lights to front and rear but my dealer told me they were standard!!!

So ended up without them as they are infact not standard on the sport!

and the necessary wiring isn't in place for the rear at least, as per my photos above, so the rear setup isn't a retrofittable.

front however might be, we need someone WITH the maplights to see how many wires they have on their front loom (on mine [and presumably yours] there are 9 wires but the connector has space for 12)

so basically waiting on volunteers :P

Have you got the dimming rear view mirror? Could be the missing pins?
