When developing both the A90 and the LFA, they said they wanted to go front engine (or front mid engine) because the driving characteristics are what people were used to.

I have a hard time believing they will put an engine behind the driver unless it is a low powered budget car like the previous MR2 spyder. The rumored $95,000 (direct conversion from the 10 million yen in the article) will be anything but that.

Electric motor can assist the turbine to provide supplemental boost air to the engine
Electric motor (generator) can be driven by excess turbine energy from the exhaust flow

Exciting

So I guess the trade-off for this apparently standalone CSL type supercar is making a potential M4 CSL and/or M8 CSL redundant therefore highly unlikely?

Unless the former is being conceived as a very exclusive, concept-car-like (similar to the 3.0 CSL Hommage) model to be released in very limited numbers with an exorbitant price tag to match, in which case it wouldn't necessarily make the latter redundant.

My guess is that it’s an M4 CSL mule. You can’t really hide an M4 under an M4 so 8 series body parts are used as cover.

If it is an M4 CSL I suspect it will be similar supercar level as a GT3 RS.

Pure speculations of course. It can be something standalone as you say but you would think we would have heard some rumors as we have about an M4 CSL.

That sounds awesome. Though I’m not sure what E9 3.0 mean...a 3 liter engine in the P58 or a 3.0 homage evolution? And E9 what is that? Can be just about anything including an M4 type of body I guess? More likely a homage thing though as guessed by others. Cool!

My takeaways from this thread:
- BMW //M will be producing a limited production performance vehicle to celebrate its 50th anniversary
- Will be aimed towards the E9 CSL, also celebrating its 50th birthday
- Most likely a two seater
- Front engine P58 with a RWD transaxle, similar to the M4 GT3
- Will have some form of TERS, which BMW filed patents for a few years back but has yet to implement
- Doesn't appear to have any form of electric/hybrid powertrain, given the lack of appropriate labeling required by EU laws for test vehicles

[D]uring test drives the prototype hit the crash barriers of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. For reasons unknown, the pilot, to whom nothing happened in the accident, left the lane and hit the guardrail with both the driver and passenger sides. The accident happened behind the second jumping hill in the plant garden. The car first touched the baffles with the driver's side. The force threw the car into the section of the Stefan Bellof S, where it crashed with the passenger side on the other side of the street. No longer ready to drive because the left front suspension was broken, the damaged vehicle had to be rescued. The test drives on the ring were interrupted for the recovery.

E9 was the body number of the original 3.0 CSL which celebrates 50 years on May 1st 2022 (along with BMW M's 50th anniversary on the same date). E9 means just the same as E28, E30, E90 etc. Just a very early Entwicklungsstufe number and therefor only one digit.

E9 3.0 CSL means the original Batmobile from 1972
