If you can't make your product uglier with each new generation then you're not a good designer.

Front...ok is not super sexy but not even that bad; Instead tail lights have no sense, are terrible and completely ruin the rear.

I like German cars for how they drive first, but also for their clean understated design. Now that BMW is adopting busy Japanese styling, might as well go Japanese all the way... I was planing to replace my M240 with a G42, but I find myself more and more attracted to the new Supra... Maybe a CPO Cayman...

(I know the Supra is pretty much a BMW)

I'm still in denial about this lol. I really hope those leaks aren't the new 2er, but it seems like wishful thinking at this point. It already looks dated. If you told me this was the outgoing 2er and that the F22 was the upcoming car, I would believe you. SMH

The proportions are messed up. G42 is wide...like F87 wide.

Probably should start with this instead

Well said! Emphasis on the boxy

The grilles look good but the rest of the design elements of the front end don't seem to work with the rest of the car. Hopefully they get the front end right on the G87 M2. I doubt Bmw will slap on such awful headlights but if they are for real then its designer should be shot!

Rest of the car looks not too far off from current which is a good thing.

Having seen the G80 and now this I'm glad I'm in line to get one of the last of the current gen M2s. I'm going to ride this design 'bump' out for the next generation.

There is an AI solution that actually tells company how big their logos must be for Chinese market, I kid you not. It is even funny when you learn Chinese dont like it (and - it makes sense).

I think it is very clear that sometime in 2028 or so we're going to get a phenomenal concept vehicle from BMW reinterpreting it's original design language.

And then sometime around 2030 BMW will get its shit together and start cranking out good cars again.

But it will probably have to fall somewhere below VW before it makes the proper course-correction.

In the meantime, my next car will be a Porsche.

I think the point is that even some amateur / guy on YouTube is able to point out the pretty obvious problems with the 2 GC and make some reasonable suggestions for change that arguably look better. Perhaps not as good as it could ... but most folks would say better.

Since it looks like the new 2 coupe will be taking a lot of design elements from the 2 GC, seemed like a relevant reference point.
I agree, that actually he is pretty talented in his own way and very good he points out issues with designs overall. I hope more people do this but listening to Frank you realize just how much this is a corporate culture issue rather than bad designer issue. Essentially what happened in BMW it seems is someone very high up, who is not a designer, is standing over the design team and tells him what to do and those people have to do it. They are all very talented designers, who took a while to get to be in charge of design in BMW and worked in other companies so I really really dont like calls to fire Dukec or his colleagues just like that. I think it is all about something bit off in BMW chain of command where someone barges in and tells them this is the front I want and these guys have to slap it on the car.

Having said that of course, DUkec comes from PSA, a ton of front drive cars with their own peculiarities in design and VW earlier in 2000s which werent nice looking to me (sans Scirocc) and thus far I havent really liked many things he makes. So it could also be someone in BMW just doesnt have the balls to tell everyone "the king has no clothes".

Lets see - if 4 series doesnt sell he will probably be replaced. That I can tell you because that car is a big volume seller and you cant flop it. Good design sells and if car doesnt sell - its bad design in this case, period.

IF this render is at all accurate, it becomes apparent that the current crop of BMW designers have made some of the same mistakes they made on the 2 GC and the 4.

One of the mistakes I heard the former designer of the X5 mention was how the crease no longer goes through the doorhandles and we see that mistake in the 2 GC and this render as well.

This video goes over the mistakes in the 2 GC and mentions that as well as problems with the headlights, tail lights, and air scoops.

This guy hit it right on the nail for me. I don't like all the strange angles and extra trim pieces on the bumper and the kidney grills although better than other new bmws still are ehhh not great. There's a way to make the car look more modern and new without All the hideous lines and bizarre looking extra tail light plastic. Maybe I just like the simplistic version from e36/e46 bmws.

The tail lights remind me of the Volvo SUV that had some useless enormous piece of red plastic running up toward the top of the car. It just doesn't make sense and is unappealing.

But the bumper on this is the one thing that I find disgusting

It's the piece you show the world, why make it look so cheaply blinged out with over eventuated lines and angles, there's too much going on and it's not aesthetically pleasing.

Can't agree with you more, seems that bmw introduced the Toyota(Lexus) design style, using more complex lines instead of old straight and powerful lines.
