While the Beach Boys (initially called the Pendletones) did not start surf music, they started it for me personally. In November of 1961, they released their first record Surfin' on Candix records. It got some airplay, particularly in Southern California. I lived in Maryland at the time and heard it a few times. My recollection is that it got airplay for a few weeks, then faded away. But in 1962, it again hit the top 40 and I was more impressed; so much so that I bought the 45rpm record. And now the Beach Boys had the Capitol Records effort behind their music and became a very popular group. For a year or so, they could do no wrong and I spent my limited income buying Beach Boys albums -- until a new group from Liverpool in the UK gave them stiff competition at the top of the charts.
I liked the Beatles but was a bit put off that they knocked my favorite group off the top of the top 40. It took me a year or two to fully appreciate the Beatles, while still enjoying the Beach Boys. Surfin' has a touch of doo-wop to it in the backing vocal; after all, it was the end of the doo-wop era in pop music. Beach Boys - Surfin' (1961)

And then, within a few years, we could add folk-rock and acid rock into the mix for a surfeit of musical ecstasy. The good old days, indeed.
Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! (1965) Grateful Dead - Morning Dew (1967)
