Hello,

I recently got my wife a 2016 116d back in May and she has driven it exclusively. She has complained that it didn't really have a lot of power and had stalled it out a few times. I figured it was her just getting adjusted to the car. Her previous car was a Renault Megan diesel, also manual. I've been driving it for the past 3 days and I feel like there is a long delay in the throttle response. For instance, I can press down on the accelerate all the way and release it (just a quick step) and the RPMs don't break the 1K mark. I know the engine doesn't have much torque to begin with and it's not the first small diesel engine car we've had, but the delay seems excessive. I have stalled it 3 times this week and have been driving manual transmissions for a long time. Thank god it has hill assist (holds the car on an incline) or else I'd be falling back a few feet before the engine built up enough speed and torque to catch the car.

I previously had a 2013 Renault Clio Diesel and I never stalled that thing. The throttle response was instant despite it being a diesel. It was gutless, but starting it on an incline was never an issue because the engine could spin up fast enough between taking my foot off the brake and working the clutch. With the Clio I could begin pressing the accelerator and releasing the clutch at the same time. With this 116d, I need to press the accelerator, wait a second (not an exact time, but it feels like an eternity), and then start releasing the clutch. If the road declines or is flat I can drive it like the Clio, but it is the most sluggish start ever.

It was a surprise for her and I didn't drive it beforehand. Car has 15,000Km and is still in warranty. Just want to see if this is normal behavior for this engine and not waste time at the dealer for them to say there is nothing wrong.

So, is it me or should I take it to get looked at?

I own a 114d and it is able to climb without a problem without having to rev it hard (under 1500) at what revs are you taking off?

Are you sure you are reving it enough?

If the road is flat or declined, it's fine at 1500rpm. Anything with an incline, it needs like 2000-2200 to keep it from stalling. The biggest issues is how long it takes to build the RPMs. I have to take my foot off the brake, rev it to get the RPMs up around 1800 and then I can start slipping the clutch. On my previous diesel, I could press the accelator and start releasing the clutch at the same time. The delay in building the RPMs is what I think maybe wrong.

So, do you have a delay in your 114d when you press down on the accelator?

as far as i can remember there is no delay,i shall take my car out for a drive today and test this....i will come back with a reply

i have not noticed any delay,i have driven over an incline a few times to see (about 30% angle) and it went without a problem....

30 percent? Wow. That is really steep. The steepest road in Norway is around 25 percent, and it is supposed to be one of the steepest roads in Northern Europe.

And there should always be a delay from you hit the throttle until you have turbo boost. I used to have a four cylinder petrol F20, and now have a three cylinder petrol F20. They both have a turbo lag of around one second. That is at normal driving RPM. At idle, it is even higher. I drive a lot of various rental cars, diesel and petrol, and they all seem to be like that.

Naturally aspirated engines are significantly quicker, but they also have a lot less torque at low RPM.

The electric cars, of which we have a lot in Norway, are awesome at this task. They have plenty of torque from standstill, instantly.

it wasnt the entire road....i was going over some tram tracks...where you have to go on a slope down and then you are at the tracks and then you have to go up again and i simply descended,stopped and then climbed back up

Install a heavy duty clutch and dial up 3500rpm.
