Battery Discharge Error message

Hello everyone! I’ve been getting the warning that my battery is getting bad, or out of charge.
I had to jumpstart it a couple of times,
as the original battery is getting 10 years old next year i decided to buy a new one.

I bought a bosch 80Ah AGM battery and installed it today, I changed the capacity in the car to 80Ah from 90Ah with bimmercode and registred it with my friends iCarSoft Max, it said it was a registered succesfully.

Now after my shift at work I got the error message once again, even after I’ve installed the brand new battery. Anyone else had this issue? Or knows how I can solve it?

My car is a BMW 116D 2014

Thanks!

Hello!

Make sure the car is aware the battery is new (proper registration): this affects the way it's charged.

Check the alternator, of course. The simplest way can be the hidden menu: when the engine is running the voltage should be higher than from the battery.

Going down with the battery capacity can be a not so good idea. And by the way, how much charged was the brand new battery? If it was low this can be it.

No one Hi! Thanks for all the suggestions, i’ll try out all the methods. I think the battery was almost fully charged, but I’m not 100% sure.

I’ll look into it, thanks! And btw, with the hidden menu you mean the menu that can be accsessed at the instrument cluster with the VIN number?

Thanks again!

It must be sold "pretty" fully charged but it might be not the case if it took too long to sell it. My remark about the capacity is just a general one, of course: 80Ah and 90Ah shouldn't be an important difference.

Yes, that one: https://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=715852. There are many YouTube videos showing it.

No one Unfortunately, I’ve tried it all, and no change. The battery is fully charged, i also tried to re-register it but no change.

I’ve got a subwoofer wired in the trunk and i’ve noticed my amp doesn’t turn itself off after i’ve locked the car. I think that is the problem, or atleast i hope it is… Thanks for the tips!

Discharge is an issue, of course! I have a portable flashlight in the car. They recommend to store it plugged into the power socket in the boot but I have my doubts. Going without the subwoofer can be worth a try. Increasing power consumption and decreasing battery capacity is a doubtful combination, incidentally.

The car doesn't turn itself off when you lock it. It stays on for a while before "falling asleep". The engine start/stop button remains lit I recall.

Do you really mean that you have the battery fully charged and the car tells you the battery is critically low? It should also disable "unimportant" consumers then: the electric heaters and even the cabin ventilator. I use the notorious "auto stop/start" function (in warm weather: it doesn't work when it's cold anyway) to check if my battery is fine and I don't need an extended (/higher revs) run to fill it up.

No one Hello again, the weird thing is, if i let my car rest maybe 24 hours i get the warning, but the car starts fine and everything works, electric heaters etc.. And if i stop the car immediately after and restart it the warning isn’t there. It’s so weird, and I can’t figure out what causes it, because even if my amp is running all night my battery is still normally charged in the morning, like the warning is just glitched or whatever…

I’m going to try to disconnect the amp and see if i notice any difference, i’ll miss my sub, can’t stand the ”bass” in the OEM speakers😂😂

Thanks again for everything!

krillekatt Hello again, it looks most apparent you need to consult a service then.

No one I think i’ve found the issue. I disconnected the amp yesterday and the car didn’t warn about the battery today, I’ll rewire it and i hope it works!

Just rewire it properly this time. My wild guess is it might be causing some non-critical but noticeable discharge ("leak") that causes the error message.

Usually the cause is a bad connection to earth (minus on the body).

The remote cable was wired wrong, so the amp never turned off. I rewired it right and now it works like a charm!
