Looks like the M2 is fitted with the EPS that has this issue. No mention what production dates are affected. They'll most likely include that info in the April update of this SIB.

AFFECTED MODELS
F95* (X5 M Sports Activity Vehicle)
F96* (X6 M Sports Activity Coupe)
G05* (X5 Sports Activity Vehicle)
G06* (X6 Sports Activity Coupe)
G07* (X7 Sports Activity Vehicle)
G20** (3 Series Sedan)
G22** (4 Series Coupe)
G23** (4 Series Convertible)
G26** (4 Series Gran Coupe)
G29* (Z4 Roadster)
G42** (2 Series Coupe)
G80* (M3 Sedan)
G82* (M4 Coupe)
G83* (M4 Convertible)
G87* (M2 Coupe)

Only vehicles that are fitted with an Electric Power Steering (EPS) from ThyssenKrupp Presta Steering (TKPS) as noted below.


* Vehicles are fitted with an EPS from TKPS
** Vehicles can be fitted with either a TKPS or JTEK EPS (G20, G22, G23, G26 and G42 Only), these vehicles must be checked first to see which EPS is installed.

CORRECTION
Replace one or both tie rod assemblies.

I can't believe my car has a recall, and two service bulletins before even being released. On the other hand, I'm damn happy BMW is replacing faulty components after a thoroughly vetted Problem Management process.

The SIB doesn't indicate all cars will exhibit this issue but if you get your car and do notice noise from the front you at least know what it is.

I got my pellet smoker from a company that started out by making home pellet stoves. Some industries are actually applicable in multiple settings and save a ton in r&d.

I was kidding. Many companies are into auto parts that are bigger in some other industry. Thyssen Krupp definitely more recognizable as an elevator company than purveyor of steering components for fine German automotive machinery.

So this is recall #2 for a car that hasn't even gone on sale yet? Not off to a stellar start. NFW I'd want to own a first-year car, particularly a very early one. But that's just me.

It's not a recall, it's a SIB and if you look at the affected models it's a large range of BMWs.

I believe this is something the G80 and G82 crowd has periodically clamored about with no fix. At certain times it was just accepted that it made noise from some of the threads I read there.

Quite a few folks thought it was suspension issues from lowered cars on springs or HAS kits.

I just appreciate that bmw is catching this stuff now, some auto makers wouldn't catch this stuff for 5 years, and others would just pretend that it's not even possible that anything could go wrong with their vehicles.

I've never been worried that issues would not be addressed by BMW. Sure, sometimes it takes them a while to get to the bottom of it, but they ultimately come out with a fix. If a part has a potential to fail but is not subject to a recall, they'll automatically extend the warranty on said part to 10yrs/100Kmls.

FWIW, the airbag cover recall effected all 2 series; a car that's been in production for 1.5 years. I'm not worried about a first year G87. There's nothing new in this car.

Had this issue on my G22. Dealer ended up replacing the steering rack. Was at the dealer for about a month. At the time this wasn’t a known issue. Dealer had to test drive for a couple weeks with chassis ears until they figured it out. Glad there’s an official fix now.

I’m getting creaking noise on my X3 which I’ve started a post link here. I wonder if it extends to G01 models but not listed in the notice.

I’ve taken out to the dealer for warranty repair twice now, and I’m about to take it back to them for a third time!

This has also been referred to as the “clunking sound” on G20 forums. This creak/clunk happens even on 100% stock vehicles with stock and M perf OEM springs. For some such as myself, I heard the clunk within 2 weeks of ownership on stock springs and to this day with dinan springs, 12 months later.

All the major manufacturers were but it was at a high tolerance..build quality for medical devices are much higher than that of a car.
