Wing mirror disassembly?

Hi All

I've got manual folding mirrors on my 2016 M-Sport 125i, and I'm looking to retrofit electric folding mirrors. Mine has the gloss black mirror surround and electric versions of these seem quite rare/expensive, whereas the matt black surround mirrors are more common/cheaper.

Is it possible to dismantle the mirrors so I could fit the inside of the electric mirrors on to my existing mirrors? I can remove the mirror glass, the mirror cap and then the bottom part complete with the indicator, but that's the only information that I can find. Anyone have a guide to further dismantling of the wing mirror?

I have dismantled a fold-in mirror and the procedure I used is detailed below. I would expect the manual mirror to be similar except for there being no fold-in motor.

Note: The following assumes the wing mirror has been removed from the car or the three TX30 mounting plinth fixings have been exposed.

1. Tilt the mirror glass in at the top as far as it will go.

2. Using a nylon trim tool at least 20 mm wide pry the mirror glass out starting at the bottom in the middle and working your way around. Put some masking tape on the edge of the back plate surround to protect it from marring.

3. Remove the two wires that provide power for the heating elements.

4. Remove the mirror cap by squeezing the three clips together that pass through the backplate and gently ease the cap off. There are two pegs and a hook (easily broken!) that engage with the top of the indicator unit which need easing apart. Another hook engages with the bottom cover.

5. Remove the mirror glass motor by removing the TX10 x 37 mm set screw from the middle of the motor. On the reverse side at approx. 1 o’clock and 9.30 there are two out of three tabs that need to be squeezed inwards to allow the motor to be pulled off the cast frame.

6. Remove the back plate surround by removing three no. TX10 x 8 mm set screws and two no. TX10 x 14 mm self cutting screws.

7. Remove the indicator unit by removing the TX10 x 8 mm set screw from the front. Rotate the outer side of the unit backwards to unhook it from its inner edge.

8. Remove the indicator unit wiring connector.

9. Unhook the 2 wiring looms where they are wrapped around the lugs near where the controller is mounted.

10. Remove the fold in / out motor wiring connector by lifting up the clip at its back and pulling the connector forward.

11. Remove the bottom cover by wiggling it away from the mounting plinth.

12. Using snipe nose pliers, or similar, rotate the cap on the underside anticlockwise and then lift it out.

13. Remove the rubber boot from around the main electrical connector.

14. Remove the foam padding from the mounting plinth.

15. From the underside press in one of the two clips (only one is accessible) that hold the main electrical connector to the cast frame and wiggle the connector out.

16. Remove the two small connectors from the main electrical connector. Make a note of where each one goes.

17. Pull all the wires out through the frame so that they are at the front of the unit.

18. Remove the mirror controller by removing the TX10 x 14 mm self cutting screw on the rear and squeezing the two tabs on its side from the back and pulling the controller downwards.

19. Remove the cast frame from the mounting plinth with a 3/8” flat blade screw driver to prise the cast frame up using the fold-in stop lug as the lever point. Once the cast frame is raised about 4 mm rotate it anticlockwise about 90° to unclip it from the mounting plinth. It can then be wiggled out. The cast frame retaining ring is spring loaded and will snap back down if released before being rotated.
