Hi all, recently purchased this lovely car, however some mornings even with my foot down, the car jolts forward and back for a couple of seconds, but then is fine? Is this a costly fix?

If it feels like the car is stuck, it is probably just sticky brakes. It is quite common if the car has been parked wet, and has been standing for a while. The brake rotors will get some surface rust as well. You will also hear a grinding noise from the brakes until you do a hard stop or wear the rust off by normal driving. Then everything is fine.

If the engine is stuttering, it is probably something more serious.

I don't think it's the brakes. I think it might not be getting the petrol or something initially? Or maybe the clutch

Now I see: it's a trouble starting out! ("Why didn't you say so?" ) Yes, people say there's a recall action on fuel pump issue. Free, even if your warranty is void (I presume you wouldn't have questioned a new car). Don't hesitate to address an official BMW service.

It's a 2011 plate. I have BMW service inclusive pack, and its due in 400 miles, if I get it done and mention the fuel pump you're sure I won't be stung for it?! Its my first real expensive purchase so could do without that bill after 2 months of ownership!

My 118i does the same sometimes.
Best advice I can give is don't give it full throttle when cold (which you shouldn't anyway). And allow it to get warmer before any large applications of the loud pedal.
I find that on a cold day, starting the car a few mins before you drive avoids the stuttering completely.

Actually they must check if there's an action for your car themselves when you come and check in for the service. Certainly you can query. I suggest you call them and ask. They'll need your VIN number to accomplish.

Also, manufacturer's action must be unrelated to servicing: you should be able to have it carried out unconditionally, right away if you choose, without (necessarily) servicing first. Just query to make sure.

Why would you be stung, BMW would be pleased to see your car if you feel their is a problem with it's fuel pump. Actually any car manufacture would be pleased to see a car which may have a problem.

I do agree with other comments, if you don't let the engine warm up before planting you right foot then you will have problems.

Ok I'll book it in for a service and mention the fuel pump issue (I believe it's the issue) and see what they say. Thanks for the advice guys, other then that the F20 is an awesome car!

So I have a service booked in for next Thursday. I mentioned the fuel pump and my concerns over it, she said it wouldn't be covered and would be an additional cost, i'll keep you posted!

Did you tell her the VIN? If not, she wouldn't know, so don't worry.

I can't find a BMW site with an online recall check (VIN input form) but here's what I referred to in general: http://www.bmw.co.nz/com/en/owners/b...d_recalls.html. In particular: "The BMW dealers have access into BMW’s global system and can check for outstanding product enhancements or recalls relating to your vehicle. Again this service is free of charge."

Does it only happen for the first minute or two, or does it persist for several minutes until thoroughly warmed up?

For the first couple minutes then it's fine. I have to to rev the engine a couple of times in neutral then it won't do it as I set off.

I had this issue with my last BMW - N/A 2.5 litre 6 so possibly different - but it would hesitate under the first couple of accelerations of the day mainly on a cold morning then run perfectly.

I was led to understand that it had to do with oil viscosity and pressure affecting the way VANOS changed the timing and that the engine needed a few minutes for the oil to properly circulate for the system to work optimally.

There was a problem with the very first F20 having an issue with the butterfly in the exhaust sticking due to the the choke control holding it closed.
Ask to have the service tech check it.

I am driving my second F20 116i now. Both cars had the issue you describe.
If you take off directly after you have started the problem occurs. At my cars it disappears after 5-10 seconds.

I think this is an engine characteristic (as well as the rattling noise after cold start)....

I'll try and remember this! Thanks for all the help so far guys. By the sound of it, I kinda have to learn to wait 10 seconds in the morning before setting off.

did you manage to find the cause for this? mine started to do this, esp during cold start there's a slight stutter/judder even with brake down.

My 116i runs rough and hesitates when the throttle is opened even just enough to start moving slowly, but only after a cold start.

It doesn't worry me because it settles down after a few seconds although there is slight hesitation when setting off unless I rev up a bit when letting the clutch up.

I think BMW have just set them up to run as lean as possible when the cat is cold to improve the emissions.

My car stutters occasionally when I step on the accelerator, after changing a faulty fuel pump.
