Tyres questions.

I've been reading everywhere but I couldnt find a final answer.

I have a 120d with Xdrive and for winter tyres I just got this square setup:

BMW 16" Styling 377 7J with Hankook i*cept RS 2 (W452) 205/55 R16 94H

I read good reviews about this tyres so I hope it would be fine for this winter.

My problem since I have this car are the summer tyres.

I dont know why my xdrive car came with a staggered setup, because if the car is AWD it does not make much sense.

Wearing RFT (bridgestone s001) the car have no grip on wet and the comfort is absolutely awful.

If Im not wrong this setup looks like :

225/40/ 18 with 7.5J (front)
245/35/ 18 with 8J (rear)

So basically my question is : Should I keep the staggered setup or I can go for a square one?

Can I have a square setup with those wheels?

I assume a square setup with 225/40 would be the best option, but Im not 100% sure.

Its also cheaper tho.

Im thinking about Michelin sport pilot 4 or Continental conti sport 5.
Whats is the best option?

Thanks and sorry for this long thread !

I think the best solution is to get 2 extra front wheels, and use in the rear. I am planning to do the same.

I am very happy with Michelin PS4.

That would be more expensive than get a new staggered setup.

If the tyres are the same size why should I have any problems?

For now the only reason I found about staying with the staggered is the "look".

You could use 225 tyres on an 8" wheel, but it will not be a perfect fitment. The rolling resistance will be slightly affected, but should be within tolerance for AWD use.

Thanks mate.

What Ive been reading is it shouldnt be problematic if I have AWD and just 0.5" of difference. They said it would be a another story if its 1" or more.

What about using 245/35 in fron and rear?

245 up front will cause more tramlining, but it will probably be possible if you have the right wheel offset. 235 all around is also an option. I have seen that used on some track cars.

235/35 is the safe way of avoiding rubbing, and you will probably get slightly better acceleration. 235/40 will fill out the arches and look better.

I would not have gone any wider than 225, but it is a matter of personal preferences.

Yes. But I would (will) personally also go for front wheels in the back. I prefer the lighter 7.5" rims with lower offset.

I am running squared 225/45/R17 winter tyres on my 120d Xdrive, with front wheels being 7.5J and rear - 8J. The fit on back is not as good as the original 245/40 - the tyre does not cover the rim perfectly, but otherwise no issues so far. I am considering getting squared PS4 for the summer as well, replacing the terrible in wet Potenza S001's. If I manage to find good price 7.5J rims - I will replace my rear 8J's with these.

Why do you have 245/40 on the rear ones? I have 245/35.
I think I would never buy Bridgestone anymore.

@Chocolatero€ I have 17" rims on my 120xd Msport, that's why I have 225/45 front and 245/40 rear. You are on 18" and that's why you have 225/40 and 245/35, so that the total diameter stays roughly the same. Pozdrav

Yes, I will. But the weather is rainy and dark, don't know if anything will be seen as the difference is really hard to spot anyway.
