AMG moving to a 4 cylinder hybrid

https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/auto...2788a50a9af9ad

Sounds like an interesting Frankenstein approach to a high performance power plant design and I suppose the direction all manufacturers are moving toward.
Also sounds like a reliability nightmare.

We have a 2013 E550 with the biturbo v8 and the thing absolutely hits like a hammer when the throttle is floored - perhaps a faster car than my SC M3 6MT given the AWD component holding all that power to the pavement. It's really the only redeeming quality of the car. It was a 90k car in 2013 and the damn buttons are peeling, the shades don't work, it rattles over bumps. MB merging with Chrysler...what could go wrong.

Reliability nightmare is right. MB is trash reliability these days. Too many recent examples to list.

The article mentions a 400V system. If true, and not a mistake referencing their utter failure with 48V hybrids, it represents a new hybrid architecture. No way should anyone buy this until it has been in production and received a facelift/LCI. Even then, caveat emptor. If MB offers hybrids or EVs only, they have excluded themselves from my consideration set.

MB has proven repeatedly that they are unable to launch new tech without pain and agony borne by the consumer.

It is what it is. At least ICE still lives on and the car will have a lighter front end for improved handling. Personally I've never enjoyed how the V8 AMGs handle. They are competent but not lively or engaging for people like me. More straight line missiles than canyon carvers.

The tech looks promising, basically trickling down from their F1 program.

It will certainly be quick. 600+hp

The best thing about the AMGs were the phenomenal exhaust note on the V8s. Probably more fart can going forward.

At this point they might as well have just gone full EV.

I really like this drivetrain setup - allows for better weight distribution and good performance while giving better fuel economy.

The only issue is that 4 cylinders sound like crap and in particular the CLA/GLA/A45 engine sounds utterly horrible. I also hope that overall it isn't heavier than the V8 setup.

Yes, that will be interesting to see if this new setup is actually heavier than the V8.

Mercedes’ batteries are trash compared to BMW. The main acid batteries in the regular cars lasts 2-3 years and cost nearly as much as a BMW battery to replace that lasts at least twice as long, and they have a small accessory battery in the dash that’s not connected to the charging system so it’s another 200-300 bucks for that.

The bigger main battery that is in the 2019 S class we replaced while I was there didn’t even last 2 years and was replaced at $2100 and not covered under the new vehicle warranty. I’m wincing to think how much this thing in the AMG is going to cost to replace.

Plus nobody gets an AMG for a 4 cylinder, they all want that engine/exhaust noise of a V8/V12

This is the way. It's what people want. People want to go straight-line faster, faster accel, faster 0-60. It's going to lead to electric eventually, but we are in the in-between where there isn't enough battery performance yet.

Polar moment. Sticking a bunch of weight at the ends of a car is not better weight distribution. There's more to weight distribution than where it is. If the battery was in the dead middle, ok, maybe then, assuming we aren't adding too much weight to it...

Weight distribution is a non-issue. Many ICE vehicles today are 50/50. EV or hybrid are not enablers for this.

A more complex car from an automaker that already has a fair bit of reliability issues. What can go wrong?

Both lighter and more powerful! BMW could learn a thing or two there.

"Despite adding a hybrid setup, the powertrain's weight is expected to undercut that of the old V8 while lowering the center of gravity."

Yet this lighter c63 will still be a few hundred pounds heavier than an xDrive M3.
