BMW Workshop replaced iDrive 'hard drive'...It's still broken!
Around a month or two ago my iDrive system started to completely shut down and restart every five or so minutes; sometimes sooner, sometimes longer. Occasionally the system won't restart but it will show 'no signal' on the screen, which lasts for around a second. I took the car to a local BMW specialist who said that the problem is quite common and that they would start by trying to update the software, as this might fix the issue. Prior to the workshop starting the update the workshop rung me to warn me that it might not even work and once applied it might break the iDrive completely and in which case I would need to replace the 'hard drive'.... Guess what happened next? Mid update the workshop rung me and told me that their systems were showing a 'critical' error and that they would need to replace the 'hard drive'. I swolled my pride (my last meal due to how expensive the replacement was) and told them to go ahead. The new 'hard drive' is in and it worked perfectly for all of one day. It's now back to the same old restarting every five minutes or so. I'm obviously going to speak with the workshop however, does anyone have suggestions on the next step? What could the issue be as I thought/hoped that a new 'hard drive' would solve the issue..

Yes, it's seems quite common: https://f20.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1474339. By the way, do you really have a hard disk drive (with the top Professional navigation only), or is it actually just hard to drive without it (I mean, replacement of a nonexistent item would be quite an issue)?

I don't have the top professional package; I have the basic 'Sport' package, so no Sat Nav etc.. What is the component called on a vehicle of my spec which would have to be replaced if the iDrive was faulty? I'm going to ring the workshop tomorrow and speak with them so they can resolve the issue. I've not had any issues with the Workshop and they are held to a high regard so it shouldn't be a problem. Although, now you've mentioned a non-existent item being replaced I am sceptical however, I'm hoping that this is just the part being referred to by the wrong name.
Thank you for the link to the thread. I will have a more in-depth read however, my understanding is that a replacement is the best option....which I thought I had, had done. |
