Took me a while to go looking for one on the 120d, yes it's still there, thank god. Still miss having a coolant temp guage though but reading above makes it easier to move on. I'll still allow the engine to idle for a while after coming off a motorway at services etc as it is second nature after the last 12 years and can't hurt.
I keep disabling the start stop function as it's annoying, especially when I forget to do it LOL. I lol'd at the testing phase marked "Maniac" westphone nice one. |

Hee hee.
I got this ELM 327 dongle, and together with this "Torque" application on a smart phone you can see all sorts of information on there. I pulled water temp. but couldn't pull oil temp or maybe I didn't wait long enough. I got bored two times and it sits in my glove compartment. |

.. assume your car runs hot. it IS running hot. you can remove your plastic engine cover + insulation underneath and use a good quality 5w40 oil like liqui moly to help combat temps. always drive conservatively before parking or at least crank the heater up for a couple minutes so the electric water pump isnt circulating boiling hot coolant when the engine is shut off. |

if you press and hold the instrument cluster button while the car is running you should be able to pull up a sub menu. you can find on youtube how to unlock it (using a code through the vin) and you can then access coolant temperatures. if this is not possible for your model, a good 20 minute drive will ensure that your oil is up to temp. if it is warm outside I'm sure 10 minutes will be enough but if you keep the general rule as 20 min warmup before track time you'll be just fine.

My girlfriends old car had no temp gauge and just a warning light, I was driving down the motorway and the light came on,I pulled up immediately and shut the engine down. Too late the cylinder head was shot, I was not happy about this and had I seen a needle rising could have avoided a large repair bill.

As much as I would like to have more gauges, for instance in the sport displays of the idrive (dont understand why they just dont add a couple of them as there is plenty of room there) , I must admit the car is so heavily monitored that I doubt it would fail for temperature reasons before going to a safe stop via warnings and reduced power.
