I think its ok to have some FWD under the 1-series. And I really think BMW will make them way better than the other brands. Just look at the MINI, its FWD and runs like hell and it makes lots of fun to drive. The next BMW FWD platform is done together with MINI, so expect a top of the line FWD car!

Yes, BMW has a mission to make it's Front Wheel Drive products stand out both in looks and driving ability.

The main focus is on the 3dr Compact (forget the 0 series) which will see the return of the Compact name since the demise of the E46 based Compact in 2004. Whilst the 5dr variant goes for a more spacious type of compact car.
The 3dr is not a direct descendant .
It has it's own unique style and when you compare it to the euro-led competitors it completely stands out , next to the Audi A1 it makes the Audi too conventional looking , this is a stylish little concept which looks and will be the sportiest car in it's segment.

i'll keep my RWD bimmer, thank you much. but, I think it's a good thing that BMW is trying something different. I think they can make a great "hot hatch". I also don't think it'll ditract from their RWD cars that have always been aimed at people who take driving seriously.

Scott, will this make it to the us in a five door format? If so, could there be the new 4 cyl diesel that is coming to the states. Also can you release any info about this 4 cyl diesel discussed in other threads?

I've seen something that looks like the first post in person at a marketing research thing for BMW. no mention of FWD, RWD or AWD, just use of hybrid and other "green" power choices.
