2013 1 Series Speculation Thread

I am starting this thread to collect rumors and speculations about the 2013 BMW 1 series, due to arrive in the spring of 2012.

My opinion is the next 1 series will not have 6 cilinder engines. The mainstay will be turbo fours, and possibly a turbo 3 if it ever happens. 128i performance will be easy to match, but it's anyone's guess on equaling the 135i/DCT.

This is because small footprint cars will have to meet very burdensome fuel economy standards in the US. Furthermore, the DCT is tuned for performance and will have to be redone or replaced with the new 8 speed. Consider that the 535i GT weighting half a ton more than a 135i gets EPA 20/30 compared with 18/25 for the 135i/DCT. That 8 speed does magic with EPA tests. That 20/30 is good enough for a big car, but not a small one.

By limiting engine choices to 4 bangers a good 8 to 10 inches of space is freed up in the engine bay that can be used elsewhere.

BMW is not the only car company with this problem. Porsche managed to get an extension and has developed a flywheel based energy storage hybrid system that is very effective, but expensive. Other vehicles likely to see major changes include the 370Z, Evo, STI, RX8 and Infiniti G.

It's the next Coupe which is due then, the new hatch version is out in Europe next year IIRC, so it will be clearer as to whether there may or may not be a S6 engine when that comes out.
If there's a replacement for the 130i hatch then it's likely the next coupe/cabrio will get a S6 as well...?
The spy shots of the new hatch version shown a front end big enough for a S6.....infact the new car 'looks' significantly bigger than the current car all around....??

All the focus has been on the 1M, next up, the 70's 2002 replacement.

Light, 4 cylinder turbo, 6 speed, and retro 2002 Tii.

Am I dreaming?

But who the #$?$%& is imposing those limits on the car company?
Isn't it like the UN, you can just ignore it?

I wish we could ignore it. The old EPA rules set an average target for all vehicles from a manufacturer. The new rules go by footprint so those who make larger cars get a higher average target. This was a product of intense lobbying by the US big three who sell a lot of light trucks. BMW makes smaller cars (on the average) so they are impacted more. It is said that the redesigned 3 series has a longer wheelbase. I suspect this was done to bump it up into a larger footprint class.

By the way, my analysis of the prototype 2012 hatchback images is that the engine bay is noticeably shorter than on the current 1 series. One must be very careful when looking at photographs as there are inherent distortions from a two dimensional rendering of a three dimensional object.

It's quite possible that very good performance levels could be obtained from a turbocharged four. Hyundai is producing a 274 hp direct injected turbo four. They must meet a much lower price point than BMW, so BMW ought to be able to do something with either more power or a broader power band. A four will weigh a lot less than a six and shrinking the engine bay will probably allow for a weight reduction.

18/25 for 11 DCT is an error. It is 20/28.

I see 1 series RWD coupe go to 2 series. M2 will be I6 with Larger Twin Scroll. 128 will go to 228 with a I4 small TwinScroll, and 235 a I6 small Twin Scroll

I would like a Z2M Coupe I4 Larger Twin Scroll at 300hp/300trq and brembos with thicker rotors.

Where do you get 20/28? It says 18/25 on my vehicle sticker, EPA mileage handbook and the BMW USA site. My actual city mileage is slightly over 20, and my car only has a few miles on it. Actually, I have no doubt about 20/28 IRL, but where do I find this specification?
