this gen better than next??

of course i don't mean better overall as you'd expect overall evolutionary advances with the next-gen but specifically in terms of performance i'm wondering if the 135 may in retrospect represent a high-water mark for the 1 series non-M models, based on the assumption that the current 6 cyl. models will yield to the forthcoming 4 cylinders. my interest in this issue arises from my dilemma whether to replace my 128 now with a 135 or wait for the next gen; i've always been oriented to want the new model/new chassis etc. but in this case, with the efficiency trend in the industry, i'm wondering if the converse strategy might make more sense.

My current drive is a 335i coupe/6mt/sports and I am looking forward to a lighter more tossable 1 series coupe. Wait for the next gen. you will be happier.

if power is what you want, get a 135 or the forthcoming 1-M. i think you are correct in that the engines will be downsized, but hopefully in conjunction with balancing weight reduction and chassis tuning

the next-gen is due in about a year as a hatch which as of now the u.s. is not slated to receive; we're expected to get the next-gen coupe in 2013 but if we get the hatch after all that would immediately outdate the current model.

i'll take lightness over power any day of the week but i'm not so sure the next-gen will be lighter; in fact, it's expected to grow incrementally in size in order to increase rear seating accomodations; witness the new 5er: 2" longer, 0.5" wider, 3" longer wheelbase, and engine for engine significantly heavier. the current 1er may actually end up more powerful and at least no heavier than the next 1. fwd notwithstanding i'm intrigued by the upcoming "0" series.

3 years is a while...
I wonder when the next Gen 1 series convertible will come to the US?

Probably the same as the coupe, as both the E82 and E88 came to the US at the same time. Also, 2013 model is year is less than two years away, so it's not really that far off.

I'll second that any weight loss from the current model, and separation from the 3er will be more welcome than additional power. My M Coupe is only two or three hundred pounds lighter than the 135i, but that difference feels huge, oddly, it feels more noticeable than the difference of six hundred additional pounds over my Miata.
