So the E82 will only last 4 years before a model change?

I ordered my 135 a few months ago and it is expected to arrive at the end of this month. I understand that the 1 series hatch has been out for a while in other countries outside of north america. But the coupe is out since 2008 right? isn't it kind of early for bmw to release a new coupe in 2012? Traditionally, bmws change models every 7 years, I would be upset if my 1 coupe becomes an old model in 2-3 years. Can someone please confirm if the 2011/2012 F20's will be for the whole line of 1 series, or just for the hatchbacks? Thanks..

I would imagine the new 1 series hatch will come out first and the coupe will follow at least 1 or 2 yrs later. The new 1 series hatch should give us an indication of what the new 1 series coupe will look like though, at least from the front and the inside.

I would love it if my 1 coupe becomes an old model in 2-3 years. Especially when yearly sales are below 1000 units. It automatically becomes a collector's item. Value will hold and slowly appreciate... Now, how to get one into a hollywood movie...? Do that and it'll be looking at immortality...

assuming the new coupe comes in 2012 then yea only a 4 year model, at 1000 to 1500 units a year, especially if you have an 08, this may indeed be a keeper

Yeah this car is still a keeper. Although I think i'm going to have to stock up on turbos. How many 10 or 20 year old turbo charged cars have the stock turbos? The answer is zero.

Don't go holding your breath on rare equaling collectible. My Z3 M Coupe is one of 6000, and there were only about 3600 Z4 M Coupes. Both cars have had the "collectible" tag put on them, and while they tend to hold value better than M3's and similar cars, they certainly have never appreciated.

Could an example with 5k miles on it eventually sell for about the same price as new? Sure, but only in non-inflation corrected dollars. As with any car your best plan is surely to get out and drive the snot out of it, and with the 1er, we just have the side benefit of not seeing ourselves coming and going.

Quite a few 911 turbos are on stock turbos. Same appears to go for F40's. Oddly enough, my dad has a G3 RX7 that still has both original turbos. Provided proper cooling, there's little reason that a properly designed turbo shouldn't last a long time.

The new trend of BMW to place the turbos in the v of the engine sure seems like it would be trapping in too much heat to provide for turbo longevity though. I'd guess that N54 turbos hold up much better than the new V8tt, but of course, that's just a guess.

Just be happy you got yours when you did, the spy photos I've seen talk about increased size of the new 1 hatch... why the hell does every car have to grow with every new model. It's like all the manufacturers hear are the complaints about rear leg room and never pay attention when somebody says the car is too heavy. Pretty soon the 1 will have a 4 liter v8 in it and be the size of a chevy malibu.

we should all drive our 1 series in front of the director of the fast and furious movies. Maybe his lightbulb might go up and make another movie on just the 1 haha. It could happen

But then the 1er would have a 3 foot tall wing, flames on it, and an M1 badge even though its only a nonsport 128i

I will have to agree with Red Bread about the car not being able to appreciate in price, especially when you take into account inflation. One of the reasons why entry level german cars have a high value is because they don't get outdated every 4 years like a lot of japanese or american cars. some will argue that civics change models every 4 years and have a good resale value, but this is because there is a high demand and market for what cars like civics are good for (ie. mileage, durability, maintainence etc..)

I am going to return my e90 325i at the end of this month. And it was a tough choice for me to decide with either the MB c300 or the 135i. I have decided to go with the 135i mainly because I am a loyal bmw customer and also because the Merc's performance is no where close to the 135i. But one big factor that caused me to chose the 135i is because it is a newer model(assuming that if i were to sell the car after financing it for 5 years, it would still have a good value since there would be 1 year left before the model change) and also because the supply of 1 series is lower than the supply of Merc C classes, which makes the car hold a better value. But if the 1 is going to be outdated in 3 years, i can forsee a pretty shitty second hand value when i am done financing this car. And lets face the truth, no matter how much we love our bmws, its just human nature to want the newer model with better technology/look/performance. And there is no doubt that in 5 years, our e82's value will drop more than it should if a new model is to come out. it is fact that a cars value is a lot lower once the new model is introduced.

I can still change my mind and just lose the deposit, even though i won't since i can't think of a better car to buy within this price range. But im pretty shocked/upset if bmw does decide to change their 6-7 year cycle tradition.

All of this goes out the window if the next gen 1'er doesn't offer the same performance. i.e., if 1-series goes the way of the 3-series and starts sacrificing performance in order to capture more market share, then the first gen 1's will indeed be sought after.

The US 1-series is part of the life cycle impulse of the original European-only hatches, which have been around for a few years already.

I personally think the new Coupe will be out around 1-1.5 yrs after the hatch launch.

As the hatch and coupe are near enough the same car, it wouldn't be cost effective to have separate production runs.

I think you need to look at the E82 not as a new model but a different flavour to an older one similar to the launch of the 3 door hatch.

I'm sure BMW will stagger the release dates, just like they do with the 3-series sedan->coupe->convertible. We'll just have to wait and see.

Yes but those cars are not very old. Give them 10-20 more years and we will start to see them becoming desirable. Cars go through a phase where they depreciate considerably and then start to work their way back up. No car becomes more valuable 5-15 years after production unless it is a speculator's dream like the Enzo, Veyron, etc.

I have stock turbos on my 911, however, I have replaced them once because of compromised seals which is a typical issue with 993 turbos.
