Your premise is incorrect, it’s not just an arbitrary number the referee decides during the game. He has a watch and keeps a total of time which has been lost during the game which is then added to the end of each half.

Generally it’s only a minute or two but during the World Cup they are seem to be adding every minute wasted, which is what should happen. The game should have play for the full 90 minutes.

You think football, which is what the rest of the world calls it, is hard try and get your head around Aussie Rules (AFL)! At least the referee puts the added time up on a board at the end normal time.

This is a game of 20 minute quarters which takes around three hours to complete. The 20 minutes is actual play so every time the game stops for whatever reason the clock still ticks (the clock goes up not counts down) and no one knows how long and actual quarter goes for.


Now with that being said both Football and AFL (both 360 degree games) are so much more enjoyable to watch and play than NFL or the Rugby codes.

Yellow cards are like a subway punch card and the total number of yellow cards you get, depending on the tournament, the prize wins you a suspension for 1 match. A "professional foul" like the one you described likely is, is an instant match ban.

So penalties do carry over to the next game, which sucks for tournaments.

FIFA is an international organization of leagues. Those post-match yellow cards follow the penalized players home, possibly resulting in them being suspended from upcoming matches with their regular teams if they have accumulated too many.

I know that this concept is strange to American sports fans, but soccer has been around for over a hundred years and has developed working rules that suit the game with modernizations like VAR. I also like inter-league relegations, where perennial losers like the Cleveland Browns of a few years ago would have been booted out of the NFL if our sports leagues used a similar system. No coasting at the end of the season to get the #1 draft pick next spring.

As for the added/injury time, I like to keep a count in the back of my head when watching a match to see if I can predict the added time at the end of a half. At least in the English Premiere League, the time added seems to be plausible for the most part.....

But the penalty (yellow card) was given AFTER the match was over. The NFL analog to that would be giving an unsportsmanlike conduct after the game was decided. Ridiculous.

I could understand a suspension and/or fine if the incident warranted an assault charge, but I don't get how a game-time penalty can be assessed when a game is not in progress. That said, unless you are going to involve law enforcement for an assault on the officials after the game, it is an unfortunately unprofessional incident. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Why do you copy and paste the same Cleveland Browns explanation into responses to multiple users? And FWIW now the Browns are not a bottom of the barrel team and others are. Parity over time is also part of the game.

And how do you justify the New England Patriots and LA Rams, are they just outliers in your confirmation bias?

The referees control the game until they leave the pitch (field). Blowing the whistle ends competition, but can still administer unsporting behavior (yellow cards)
