Liar, Liar, pants on fire. Are you a liar?

I'm curious. How many of us lie and if so, why do we do it and how often?

Do you lie?
Occasionally or all the time?
Why do you lie?
Have you been caught?
Is lying worth it?

I'll go first: I don't lie hardly ever and it's never a big lie. What got me thinking about this topic is is the lie I told this morning. I'm in a hiking group and we sometimes carpool to a trailhead. One of the hikers emailed me and asked me if I wanted to ride along. I'm going on the hike but I don't want to ride with this guy. He is not a good driver and I have some anxiety riding with others from a car accident I had years ago. So, I told him I was going to drive alone because I plan to stop by and visit my daughter on the way back. Well, that last part was a lie and I don't even know why I said it. I just could have said, no thanks.

To me, it's not worth it. First, I like to think of myself as a reliable, trustworthy person. Not only is lying not in my character, I would feel horrible being caught in a lie. Also, I forget things. So, keeping track of what lie I told would not be possible.

I'm looking for this thread to become a confessional. There is already a thread for that. I'm just curious how common lying is among us off topic car lovers and why do we do it?

Told my gf that parts were covered under warranty when I actually payed out of packet.

As I kid I told lies as damage control but it bothers me that I did.

That's a good one. Regarding car parts, I got my Upper Control Arm and Lower Control Arms changed to VAC monoballs when the bushings were worn out. I told my wife I was replacing the worn out bushings. What I didn't teller here is the monoballs were way more expensive. Technically, I didn't lie....or did I?

No.

My family raised me with brutal honesty. It wasn't easy but it taught me to really value honesty and the importance of always being honest.

Then, we must ask the question, is not saying something, not giving ALL the information when saying something, a lie?

Technically no. But is it dishonest? I say yes.

I don’t lie. It’s not in my DNA. I honestly can’t lie. I don’t know how to do it. It’s pretty funny though. My mother, God rest her soul. She could lie, and would do it with a straight face while looking you right in the eye. I’m not sure if it was just a thing as she got older or if she was like that her whole life.

I don’t want to be lied to. Even if the truth hurts, I would rather someone be straight with me than give me BS.

I guess there are different types of lies. Your situation is a casual blow off. I’m talking more true relationship stuff. Also, work related. I stress to my employees. Don’t BS. Never lie. Stuff goes wrong. Tell the truth. And fix it.

Not even little white lies? I thought we all did that. After all, we are only human.

Then it goes to the next step of not saying something for fear of hurting somebody. Is that dishonest or just being a good person?

It is definitely not black and white in all cases.

I guess it depends on how you spin it. Is not hurting somebody not telling them you spent more money on items other than the items they thought you were originally getting?

I lie to my dogs all the time to trick them into obedience. They usually know but go along with it just in case a treat is involved.

Everyone lies sometime during the life and for many reasons. Some are for self preservation. Others are for greed. Still others are to destroy competition...

Then there's this:

“If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.”
...
“I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you.” ...

This is one my main reasons for not lying. I may not remember exactly what I said in a given past situation, but I will always know what I never would have said. For me personally, life is so much more simple and less chaotic this way.
