Alchemy is one of those albums that is made for the long drive, because it must be listened to start to finish, without interruption.

I love everything that this band has ever done. I saw them live in 1991 on the Real Thing tour and it blew my mind. As I bonus I got to shake Mike Bordin's hand as he walk through the front door of the club after getting out of a cab. It was one of the best shows that I have ever seen.
That sounds like a lot of fun.

Good group, good album. Here are a couple of my favorites from that album:

Billy Springs "Renewal" got a 4 of 4 star rating in 'The Week' magazine. They won't let me link to the review, so:
"Raised among addicts in small-town Michigan, he quit high school at 14 but pulled himself together. Today, 'few people in music can pluck strings like Strings; his fingers are like cheetahs sprinting up & down the neck of his guitar....'"

"Them forged their hard-nosed R&B sound in Belfast, Northern Ireland, moving to England in 1964 after landing a deal with Decca Records. The band's simmering sound was dominated by boiling organ riffs, lean guitars, and the tough vocals of lead singer Van Morrison"

I have always loved sailing ships, and the lore.

"Starbuck's sharpening his harpoon
The black man is playing his tune
An old salt's sleeping his watch away
He'll be drunk again before noon

Three years sailing on bended knee
We found no whales in the sea
Don't cry, little Robin-Marie
'Cause we'll be in sight of land soon"

Apart from Mississippi Queen, I haven't heard anything from this band. To hear your American classic rock, even the big bands (Journey, Styx, Nightranger, Kansas, Grand Funk Railroad, Toto, Steppenwolf....) is very rare in Australia apart from their hit singles. But thanks to the internet, social media and even video games, the musical world is becoming a smaller place. I first heard this band on the soundtrack to GTA V.

"Nantucket sleighride is dedicated to Owen Coffin who was cabin boy aboard the whaler Essex, which was destroyed by a sperm whale in 1819. Owen ended up in the lifeboat with captain pollard, his uncle. Two other lifeboats also put out. During the next 3 - 4 months, the lifeboats separated. One was never seen again, but some of those on the remaining two boats were eventually rescued. During those long months at sea (and on desert islands), many of the men died. The remainder eventually had to resort to cannibalism to survive. After the dead of natural causes were consumed, the men determined to draw lots to see who would sacrifice his life for the others. Owen coffin 'won' the lottery. The captain tried to take owen's place, but the youth insisted on his 'right'. The executioner was also drawn by lot. That 'winner', another young man named charles ramsdell, also tried vainly to swap places with owen. Again he refused. Owen's body kept the others alive for ten days (captain pollard refused to eat his nephew). Another man died, and his body kept pollard and ramsdell alive a few more days until they were rescued."

That's a pretty deep story for a rock song. Way deeper than the usual getting wasted, getting laid or rocking the night away.

The term "Nantucket Sleighride", refers to when the whalers went out in the little row boats to harpoon the whales. When harpooned, the whale would bolt, taking the small whaling boat on a fast & furious ride.
