Ok so costco is running a deal on a d5000 (Link Below).

I could also purchase the d40 with the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses (Link Below)

So i ask, it the d5000 a better camera or is it not worth it? What's different on the D5000 compared to the D40? Even thought money is not really the deciding factor here, is there a used deal that i would be better off with?

The 5000 D is an awsome camera. It is hard to believe all the capabilites this camera has. I've been using SLR cameras for over 40 years. Photographs are wonderful.

the D40 is WAY over priced. you can get a used one for under $350 - and those lenses are cheap, too.

yeah i saw that. i would prolly just get a used D40. is there any reason to get the d5000?

i keep reading either get the d40 or step it up to the d90

the D5000 has video and a "flip" lcd and, probably, newer sensor technology. i wouldn't.
the D40 is an extremely capable camera, and most bang for the buck. moreso than the D40x because of the smaller pixel pitch.

is the d90 a much better camera? not factoring in price

720p video, you'll probably get a little bump in IQ, and faster fps. So if those things matter to you, then yes, it is much better. Just depends on the individual.

d5000 for sure, newer, better image quality and ISO d40 is outdated as hell now.

I say D5000. I am debating right now between the Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i. Currently am leaning towards the Nikon because the Canon feels cheaper in your hand.

Im in the same boat, but im between the D5000 and the D90. I havent considered canon really but i will look into the T1i.

I think im gonna head to best buy tomorrow and get a feel for each of the cameras. Ive read that the cheaper lenses for Nikons take better pictures than the cheaper lenses for canons and i expect to be using the cheaper lenses for awhile so it makes sense to go nikon.

I bought a D40 from Best Buy. I used it for 2 days and returned it for a D5000. The D40's low light capability is bad compared to the D5000 (using the same exact kit lens: 18-55 mm VR lens). The D5000 does have a live view...but I rarely use it. In live view mode, the camera actually operates slower in that pictures cannot be snapped as quickly as just using the view finder (this is discussed in all reviews of the D5000). However, the D5000 flip and rotatable screen is great if you need to hold the camera above your head to take a picture. You can angle the LCD screen down and see what you are taking and get shots you normally could never get.

I would go with D5000 all the way.

yeah good point. i went and checked out the cameras at best buy. im out in pittsburgh for college and the best buy here sucks so i didn't get to hold any of the cameras.

they had a d90 in the glass case and damn that thing is a beast. now that ive seen it i think it might be too much for me too handle. i might just pick up a d5000 for a little less

i have a D40 right now, i plan on selling it to get a D90 instead.

If you don't want to spend the money, then I'd get the D40 over the D5000.

I got the D5000 and this is my first DSLR.

The D40 has a 6mp CCD sensor and was upgraded by the D40x using a 10mp CCD sensor
Both the D40 variants use the older CAM530 AF sensor module with a 3-point array.

The D5000 uses the same 12mp CMOS sensor as the D90, and uses the updated CAM1000 AF sensor array with 11-points and much more advanced focus tracking.

The D5000 has MUCH better low light performance than either of the D40 variants, with useable ISO up to 1600 (although it does extend to 6400 but at the expense of visible noise). The D5000 is still not able to drive older Nikon AF lenses (the non-AFS variants) - you'd have to go to the D90 to be able to autofocus with those older lenses.

The D5000 also has the benefit of an articulated LCD screen, and Live View using contrast autofocus.

Bottom line - the D5000 is a massive step forward from the D40, and a significant step forward from the D40x.

so i ended up just ordering the d5000

when i held the d90 it was such a beast. i need some time on a smaller camera before i step up lol
