M6 GC was in a totally different league. I don't buy cars because they are practical. I bought that car because it was baller.

X1, X2, X3....X7, X8....

At this rate, we'll have a X30 for the 30th anniversary of the X line from BMW!

BMW M Hybrid SUV Officially Confirmed For November 29 Debut
Quote:
Rumors of a large new BMW SUV have been swirling around the Internet since November 2017 but it wasn't until a couple of months ago when chairman Oliver Zipse indirectly confirmed the umpteenth addition to the X lineup. Speaking with CNBC in late August, he briefly talked about a "high-end car" due to be built in Spartanburg following a world premiere before the end of 2021.

To be shown at a private event on November 17, the "all-new high-powered, hybrid-electric vehicle" as it's being described in a press release will publicly break cover on November 29 at 8 PM Eastern Time. Confirming rumors of a bespoke M product, BMW USA says the premiere will feature a new "M flagship vehicle," which could indeed mean the model will be an M-only affair.

There are conflicting reports about how it's going to be called as some say it will carry the X8 moniker while others are inclined to believe BMW will take a page out of Citroën's book by naming it XM. The latter would be quite interesting to see, but perhaps the most interesting aspect is going to be the vehicle's design. Why? Because it's likely to be the first product from Bavaria to receive the already controversial split headlight design.

We've seen our fair share of spy shots that have led us to believe the speedy luxobarge will have a separate LED strip for the daytime running lights mounted up high, just below the outline of the hood. The main clusters will sit lower in the bumper, flanking a giant kidney grille to match the SUV's sheer size.

As for the hybrid setup, it's rumored to combine a newly developed twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor for a PHEV arrangement good for over 700 horsepower. There could be a lesser electrified inline-six configuration, but that too will be a full-fat M version The top-tier model is getting those stacked quad exhausts we've been seeing on prototypes lately.

Logic tells us the X8 / XM will be strictly an xDrive affair with the largest wheels BMW has ever offered on a production car, maybe even a 23-inch set. Being an M model first and foremost, it should make generous use of carbon fiber and feature large brakes given the potent hybrid setup and what will certainly be a curb weight of well over two metric tons (4,409 pounds).

BMW doesn't specify whether the vehicle it will unveil at the end of this month will be a production car or a concept, although we're tempted to believe it'll be the latter. The road-going model is probably earmarked for a debut later next year, which would make it a 2023MY product in the United States.

Auto Car's article:

Quote:

BMW will soon crown its SUV line-up with a range-topping X8 – including a flagship hybrid M version that will be the Munich firm’s most powerful series production model to date.

BMW has fuelled rumours that the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid rival is about to be unwrapped, confirming "an all-new high-powered, hybrid-electric, concept vehicle" will be shown to media at the LA motor show on 16 November, ahead of a public reveal on 29 November. Notably, Franciscus van Meel, boss of the M division and Marcus Syring, head of M design, will be on hand at the reveal - suggesting a heavy performance focus for the new model.

Expected on sale in 2022, the X8 serves as a sportier, more daringly styled version of the seven-seat X7. Although the X8 was once thought to take coupé-like rear-end design cues from the smaller X6, these first spy shots reveal that it retains a squared-edged roofline – albeit one that appears to be lower than the X7’s.

This suggests that the X8 will retain three rows of seats, either in seven-seat form or with six captain-style chairs offering greater luxury. Neither is confirmed, though.

Other design cues that mark this car out from the X7 include what appears to be a sharp nose design and broader shoulder line, plus a reduction in the glasshouse.

Details of the X8’s technical make-up have yet to be revealed, but the expectation is that it will share its platform and much of the wider mechanicals with the X7. That means a range of six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with mild-hybrid tech, an eventual plug-in hybrid and a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 523bhp in an X8 M50i.

But, unlike the X7, the M50i won’t be the pinnacle of the range because the X8 has also been conceived with a full-fat M version at the forefront of its development. The X8 M will feature a plug-in hybrid system, mating the 4.4-litre V8 to an electric motor and battery pack. Insiders suggest anything up to 750bhp would be possible as a result, making this easily the most powerful BMW yet.

Internally dubbed Project Rockstar, the X8 M hybrid will mate an electric motor of around 200bhp to the petrol engine and offer four-wheel drive. However, it is likely to adopt the switchable system of the M5 and M8 models, allowing on-demand rear-wheel drive when required.

The plug-in hybrid element will also allow BMW to dramatically reduce the car’s fleet average emissions. Expect a CO2 rating of well under 100g/km as a result. What’s not yet clear is if BMW is also planning a conventionally fuelled X8 M to sit alongside it, with reduced power and weight.

Given the X7 M50i is over Ł90,000, these range-topping models should push the X8 well into six figures. However, the most affordable X8 is expected to start from around Ł80,000.

We've been waiting over 40 years for another M halo supercar, but they're giving us this barge of a mom car instead.

Meanwhile Audi did two iterations of the R8 and Mercedes AMG has done many halo cars over the years.

Holy sh*t that is terrible. Looks like some knock off Hummer. Since when is BMW in the business of producing monster trucks?
