Steel begin to glow red at around 600 celsius, and exhaust gas can reach mutch higher temp. Here you can read an article about temperatures in and around turbos.

I have discussed the issue with Adel-75 in private messages, and I have nothing to contribute here. It is my first turbo car, and I have never checked under the hood shortly after driving hard.

Turbos get hot.

Back in the day I used to own a Subaru STI 5 Type RA (terrible car which I wish I had never bought). When I drove it hard the turbo would glow red.

While I have not lifted the bonnet on my 118i after a hard drive I am sure the turbo will be glowing. And you really don't need to worry.

If you start hearing a whining noise then start to worry as the bearing are shot in the turbo. But modern BMW engines look after there turbos. Back in the day you would need to leave a turbo engine to idle for a bit before turning it off. This would allow the oil and water to circulate around the turbo and cool it.
On modern engines this idle period is not quite so important as the ECU can run the oil and water pumps after the engine is turned off if the turbo heat is high. I do the idle thing though, old habits and all that.

Alternatively, don't rag the car so hard. Put it in ECO mode, and use the change indicator. That way the turbo never produced boost and won't get as hot.
It will also be the most boring drive ever.

I hope that helps.

I don't think the car needs an additional cooling system if you keep the standard power.
Only MPPKs have larger cooling systems.

I have driven loads of japanese turbo cars (Supra, Skyline's, STI, evo ++), after hard driving they are all orange-ish and very hot. You can easly light a cigarette on them.

Those japanese cars have been pushing from 0.6 BAR to over 2 BAR.

That beeing said, I think your turbo looks very red, that might just be the picture. Not sure.

Orange at idleing sounds very wrong..
The fault is propably that your turbo is spooling fast on idle. A bootsgauge would be great here :-P

This can be caused by alot of things:
actuator (I think?), air-intake sensor (Wrong air temp sent to ecu, much richer fuelmix) and timing are some of them.

I would try to get a new turbo aswell as it getting this hot is not good.

I am sorry but my knowledge of this stops here.

Hello Mate ,

I have gone to the dealer as the car was only less 15.000 KM and 04/2013

so it is under guarentee .

they done diag online from Germany
result : the dealer have alredy change to me : nwer Ctalyser with Lamda , sonde , new Turbo , new intercooler

nothing have changes , it still the same situation Turbo get too red and hot when I activate boost and drive on high rpm

by the way I have ICOM myself , ECU have zero error , no error on diagnostic , so if it was Mass air flow or timming or actuator , it will apear on diag !

with kind regards

Eco Pro is a setting for the car to save fuel. It changes the the throttle pedal mapping. If it affects the turbo boost, I assume it will be lower than in Comfort/Sport.

Since ecopro makes the Auto change gear much sooner it doesn't use the turbo as much. When accelerating it shifts up before 1800rpm.

The solution is not to look. I don't. Nor worry. Say, ovekvam had the whole car orange, but he didn't seem to worry either.
