116i economy
Hi everyone. I'm considering a 316i sport (with the same engine as 116i) but there aren't that many 316i owners on the F30 thread. For the same price I can have a 118d m sport with leather interior so that is also an option.
I would appreciate if the 116i owners can share what mpg (please specify if uk gallon or us gallon) they are getting. |

There is very little difference in the width between the 116i and 316i
The 316i has slightly more adult leg room in the rear I went for the 1er F20 as it was far more practical than the 3er sedan. |

Interesting point Are we talking drag coefficients in Norway at -20 (cold) or +38 (hot) in Australia as the air density also has a lot to do with drag coefficients Personally, I do not think there would be a great difference just on drag coefficients. Weight would have a greater effect (kw per ton) |

At low speeds, the aero drag does not matter much. As you say, weight is the important factor for stop and go driving. For high speed cruising however, the aero drag is very important, and weight does not matter much. |

Power to weight is still a major factor as driving motion is measured against resistance of road surface, air density (drag) and velocity against torque // KW per ton. Unless you are going downhill. I am interested to hear your opinion. Do you think the Drag difference between the 3er and 1er at 100kph is great enough to discount the difference in their power to weight ratios as a factor in fuel consumption. |

In general, large engines are better suited for high speed driving, and small engines work well for low speed urban driving. Our 116i was not very happy at 200 km/h on the Autobahn, and I guess an M135i would be very thirsty in the city. |

When I drive to work I can choose between the highway (40min) or B-roads (55min) 90% of the time it's the winding B-road route that runs through two small cities. The fun factor is more important to me than the fastest way to get to my destination. I try to avoid highways because they are utterly boring. Except when it's snowing then it's the safest way to get to my job. |

I get between 29-31 mpg on average from my 116i. Mainly short journeys to work (3 miles away from home) driving round town and A roads. On the motorway it averages about 37mpg. Im quite dissapointed with the fuel consumption as other 116i owners say they can get more. Not great for me as I dont do much motorway driving

The colds starts really hurt the consumption statistics. The longer journeys are better if you want nice figures. I recommend using a bicycle for short trips.

We've had similar experiences here in the UK with the E87 and E90 1 & 3-series smaller diesels. One particular comment from users either with both, or moving to the 1-series, noticing the mpg is not as good as expected from the 1-series at motorway speeds. HighlandPete |

Looking at the figures over on another forum the auto version is getting higher MPG on the motorway at higher speeds. Probably due to the tall 8th gear.
Our 116i auto gets 36mpg around town but 50mpg is possible with cruise set at 75mph on longer runs. Cold weather really hurts economy though, especially on short runs. Cheers Lee |
