That thing is huge, they will have to come out with a 0 series now, to get the size back down

these specs indicate, for the x20i and x25i, specific torque output of about 145ft-lbs./liter!! are they really jacking up the boost with these next-gen mills or what?

LOL...I was just about to say...I was in Germany when the 1er first came out and there is NO 135i hatch...the only hatch that comes close to the 135i is the 130i. Dual pipes does not mean a 3.0L Twin-turbo charged car. Look at the various other sports cars with twin tails....MX-5, Acura TSX.....

Why in the world would BMW put duals on anything else? Have you seen the rest of the one series pipes? This is NOTHING like them. Deffinately not a 4-banger.

Why not put duals on a turbocharged 4-banger?
What you are saying is not making sense...Why would they NOT put duals on a 4-banger? I have seen PLENTY of BMW exhausts...I did live in Germany for 13 years if you recall....I know that duals were not necessary for the 335i (the 135i proves this) yet they still put it on there....whats to stop them from putting it on a turbo-charged 4 banger....lets name a few other turbo-charged 4 bangers with dual/quad pipes: MR2, Lancer Evolution, Subara Impreza STI....those are the ones that come to mind first....besides if you haven't noticed it is becoming part of the design language for much of the automotive industry of late...

There is a very strong possibility it might have a high revving twin-power 4 under the hood.

Don't underestimate it for a single minute...

You have a point about the design cues. But wth are you talking about with evos, sti's, etc? The have ONE exhaust for ONE turbo which connects to ONE downpipe. We must be misunderstanding eachother or someone doesn't know thier imports. A twin turbo 4banger would need 1 turbo for 2 cylinders Who would do that? And yes, the best and easiest way to route the exhaust for a 335i would be TWO straight pipes straight back. It only joins on a 335i bacause of the muffler. And the 1er because of the size.

Some clarification then:

It would seem that if they can make the I6 twin-turbo'd parallel that it would be possible to do with a 4 banger...1 smaller turbo per 2 cylinders. Would they do it? I don't know.....nobody thought they would do turbo's either...let alone twin-turbo charged. Anyway we both know looking at the above pics we cannot tell if there are two pipes running from the exhaust manifold/turbos back....all we can see are 2 tail pipes, no way to know if there is a Y-pipe in there....all I am saying is that it is STILL possibly a turbo-charged 4 banger. The reference to the EVo(the Evo X has dual pipes), STI(has quad pipes), MR2(has dual pipes) is that you can have a 4 banger with dual/quad pipes OEM.(I am referencing the parts you can see out of the rear of the car...not the actual exhaust system)

BTW "duals" in my other post is referencing the exhaust pipes and not the turbo's. I think that BMW will do turbocharging on a 4banger...i do not know if they will come up with a twinturbo application or go for a fast spooling single turbo.

O.K. gotcha and I do agree, but I just think (and I'm just guessing obviously) that before they do a turbo 4banger, they would more than likely give people the n54 in a hatch variant. And it seems more logical for BMW to run two pipes from a n54 than a 4banger. That comes off as cheasy to me. Not calling the M3 or even my quads cheasy, because they are robust motors capable of having independent pipes. A four banger usually either has one collector\header and one exhaust. Thats all I'm getting at. But I would LOVE to see a turbo'd four from BMW. It would level the field of "elite" BMW owners always scoffing at import owners

Really the "only" one that should have duals are V6, v8. v10 etc. Or maybe the w motors but I'm not too keen on those.

Nah..I really would not put it past them to run 2 pipes...heck it might even be a 135d....hmmm...now thats some food for thought...LOL.
I am curious about your quad though...it can't be a true dual pipe system from turbo back due to lack of space right? It is just twin downpipes to a y-pipe to a straight pipe to a y-pipe on to the dual mufflers?

I think there is too much speculation going on a car thats not even fully undressed yet. Those breaks are smaller than the current 135i's. Theres not clear picture to whether those air ducts lead to anything. Those skinny pipes could be just to throw people off just as the entire plastic panels with camo, over a shell with camo is suppose to do. Reminds me of when the new 7 series had some camo on it, and they were showing it with quad tip exhaust. So many people that it was going to be an M7, yet it was just the new 760.

It is still too early to guess what this will be and how it will look. All I see right now is that its a hatch and its looking big.

That torque would be nasty with such a *cough* little car.
Basically my quad is one pipe from the cat back to one muffler and two pipes leaving the single muffler but the muffler is on the left side. So basically its a regular exhaust but with a pipe that wraps to the other side. The muffler has a chamber that makes it flow almost evenly out of both sides. I like it, obviously I would like it better if it was a "true" dual but I don't think bmw does that anyway. The 335i has one muffler as does the m3 but the upsetting fact to me is that we dont have the room for two pipes or two mufflers.

Yeah it would be nasty...but that is why I could see it in a 5 door hatch. I originally wanted to have quad pipes on my 1er but have since changed my mind...I would love to have some dual (just from axelback) pipes 3-4in outlets on each.....that would siiiiick...at least IMO.

I'm sure someone could do a good dual like that for you if you REALLY wanted it. You would have to remove your charcoal filter though. And find a new diffuser. I think it would be great also, especially if they had thier own can style muffler for each pipe. I'll just keep dreaming I guess.

This kills all though:

^^^That IS pretty sick...for me I would prefer the pipes a little further apart though...something like a Vettes pipes!

I wouldn't go jumping to conclusions that this is an N54.... High end motor-yes, N54 no.

When this car launches the N54 will only be left in end of life vehicles. From everything we have heard, the N55 and another to be launched motor will be picking up from where the N52 and N54 left off. They can get better response, emissions and mpg out of the N55 with it being cheaper to produce. There are 4 cylinders in the works that will put out more performance than the current N52 with less emissions and all that as well.

BMW has to get MPG in check so that will be a main focus moving forward. Also we should see more diesels offered and rumors of a permanent decrease in the cost of diesels here (no need for the $4500 ECO-credit) in the US as the numbers sold increases.
