I mean, I understand that in theory, this is true. What I'm asking about is real world experience - for example, visual inspection - some places spend 10 minutes and get under your car, others spend 10 seconds and don't. I am betting this isn't up to the discretion of the tech, since it's data, which they have to send in, but figured I'd ask if anyone gave it a shot anyway.

Given we are several months into this regulation there doesn't seem to be much of an issue.
True, a little progress is still progress. I just find it kind of ridiculous how our engineers and experts can figure out how to make these things to get clean energy, but they didn't think about, or didn't care enough about how to dispose of them once their lifespan is over.

I feel like we have too much short term solution and not enough long term consideration. We are essentially creating band aid fixes to please the masses and their "I want it now" mentality. Take electric cars for example, yeah, EV are a great to cut fossil fuels and emissions, but what a lot of people don't realize is at our current rate of demand and what the world gov'ts are pushing to achieve for EV sales in the near future, we will deplete the Earths lithium reserves in under 30 years. I went down a rabbit hole not long ago, I don't remember the details exactly but I read that it was being pushed to have something like 80% of new vehicle sales worldwide be EV by 2035, something like that, so I sat down and figured out the math and it's actually under 15 years before we deplete lithium reserves if we do actually meet those demands, but I think 30 years is more realistic as engineering and manufacturing will advance and require less lithium per vehicle over time. Regardless, we don't have an endless supply of lithium, and with more and more devices becoming wireless and requiring battery power, we use more and more lithium every year. We more than doubled our lithium demand between 2016 and 2020, and thats without a massive increase in EV production like we will potentially see over the next 5-10 years. Hell, 2021 already saw an 80% increase in EV sales globally. Additionally, we don't have the means to recycle batteries in a clean, cost effective and efficient way that doesn't require massive amounts of heat and power, so what are we going to do once we have millions of vehicle batteries needing replacing every year? It's a great "right now" fix, but what about long term?

And yes I know, this is coming from someone who drives a smelly, dirty, evil diesel, but I'm not against EV. I've been watching and waiting, and I'll get one once they can meet my demands of a vehicle, they just aren't quite there yet.

I can't disagree with anything you have said. We love to kick the big problems down the road unfortunately because of our risk-reward model. Personally everything has pros and cons and depending on the context one solution is better than the other …like all things in life no magic bullet.

Thankfully, we're not really in any danger of depleting the earth's lithium. We probably don't have enough mines currently to easily support the demand, but there is plenty of the stuff on the planet. We're getting better at finding it and mining it, and there is an option to recycle it from existing batteries, too. I'm sure we will have new chemistries in the next decade or two that help as well.

We do love to solve our last problem by creating new ones of larger size, though. I also still drive a diesel along with the EV, but the Tesla largely meets all of my needs both for commuting and travel (as long as I'm not in a hurry). They're overpriced and the interiors are crap, though.

I do like the Model X (minus that awful steering wheel), but not enough to pay the current price. The Model Y isn't bad either, but again, still out of the price range I'm willing to spend for EV right now.

I think your point about price-to-perception or price-to-value is Tesla's biggest hurdle. There is no way you can sit in a 60k Tesla and sit in any other car of a similar price without noticing the huge gap in feel and quality. Head up to the X price and it's even worse.

The instant torque is always fun, and they are brutally fast, but I'm still here trying to buy a G80, so there is still a "fun" gap, too.

Another confirmation here that MHD flash back to stock(NOT stage 0) will pass CA smog inspection no problem, no CVN / checksum issues. Just had my car smogged yesterday, no problems with my inlets/outlets or intercooler left on, just made sure to throw on stock down pipes and air box to make it look stock

No, its a factory option so they will have it in the database.

Did you also relock the DME? Do you have any other coding done to the car by chance?

I reflashed the DME back to the stock tune. There is no locking or unlocking on E90/E92 Pre-Lci DME's. I have plenty of other coding done to the car, but the DME was flashed to stock software.

Can anyone tell me if you get your DME bench unlocked if you need to lock it to pass CA SMOG? Or can you just revert your flash to the OEM file? I want to get my x5 n63tu tuned by bm3 but it needs bench unlock. I want to make sure you don't have to bench unlock it every time one its unlocked.

Can someone chime in?

I need to smog my car too. It’s 3 months late. Are running a dp? Did you put back the stock car?

Yep. And some tunes can significantly increase emissions of pollutants regulated under the NAAQS. Now, at the end of the day, I think it's not any tune that should be prohibited, but those that put a vehicle outside of emissions standards.
