Advice on an accident

We were rear-ended tonight at a stoplight. The camera at the intersection will show we were not at fault. We're meant to turn in this Chevy SUV when our new X1 arrives in a month (it's currently "Awaiting carrier assignment"). I was thinking of reaching out to my BMW dealer and telling him what happened, and that the damage should probably be repaired by the time the X1 arrives. Is that a good idea? It's probably not a good idea, right?

Your Chevy SUV will be assessed the day you trade it in towards your new X1. It'll be up the dealership at that point in time to offer you a fair price on it. You're under no obligation to tell them anything up to that point.

How old is the SUV? The older it is, the less the impact an accident will have on the price. If it is extremely old, your dealer is likely to buy it to sell wholesale for parts anyway. If it's a 3 year old SUV, then you might take a hit on the resale, but you can also ask your insurance company to go after the other party to pay for diminished value.

It's a 2019 with 21,000 miles. We were hoping to get around $28k trade value for it. I'll definitely be asking for diminished value compensation.

I'd be surprised if you will be able to get it repaired that quickly given current delays with parts (if needed). But I wouldn't say anything to the dealer otherwise. They sure as hell wouldn't be forthcoming if the roles were reversed, and it would be solely on you to dig. They will also exploit the situation to pay you way less than an actual fair diminished value. So let them dig. There's a chance if they do a CarFax lookup it won't even be updated with the accident info, either. They will turn right back around and sell it to some other person, who will also bear responsibility with doing their own due diligence.

Agree with nerdogray. 3 months wait to get into a collision shop, then disassembly to find all the broken parts, then weeks or longer for parts delivery and installation. This is my current experience and others I have spoken to have had similar experience.

You might be lucky, and/or have minimal damage. Set your expectations that repair shops are the latest "supply chain bottleneck".

Does your BMW dealer have a body shop? I have worked with dealers that would handle the repair of your car themselves so they knew it would be properly repaired and it would be paid by your insurance. Basically, they trade in a damaged car but treat it like undamaged because the cost of repairs are already taken care of by an insurance claim. However, supply chain slowdowns might make them more reluctant to use this route.

Agreed. I hit a dog last Tuesday morning with just damage to the bumper cover, trim pieces and fender liner of my Elantra Sport. By lunch I had a claim filed with State Farm and took the car to the body shop. Earliest day scheduled to drop the car off is November 14. Was told parts availability is hit or miss. Most likely wont be fixed until Late November at best, but probably December.

I wouldn't say anything at this point--if it's still not fixed when your new one comes in, you can cross that bridge when you get there. A BMW dealer is only going to send the car to auction anyway so I don't think you need to disclose it was in an accident if that's what you are asking. They have access to carfax and all that so if they were planning to retail it, they could check that but I don't think it's a big issue unless it's absolutely destroyed in which case it would be totaled.

Update on the accident:

The kid who hit us was on a provisional license and said his leg slipped and couldn't hit the brake. His mother's insurance has accepted 100% liability. The appraisal came in today at $4k, requiring an entire new liftgate among other things. The shop has ordered the parts and has scheduled me to bring it in on Oct 12 and pick up the rental.

The X1 is still listed as being "at the port," so with a little luck, I might be able to pull this off!

I remember trading in a 2007 IS350 RWD to my local dealer in the NE for a 2013 GS350 F sport. The dealer didn't even look at the car when I pulled in to the parking lot to pickup the GS.

When I traded in the GS350 for a GSF, the guy spent over an hour going through the car and nitpicked every blemish inside and out.

So it will depend on the dealer. Don't mention it, they'll see the repair work and run a carfax etc.

Your X1 probably has three recalls right now, none of which have solutions yet.
Take your time!

You're right, it does: headlights and computer system, which just need software updates, and a spark plug issue, bizarrely. Hopefully both cars I'm invested in will have quick fixes.
