We did a vertical last night. I didn't think I'd be able to discern much of a difference - if any at all - but the 2018 was clearly our favorite. It was sweeter, smoother, and creamier. And I found that surprising as I thought 2017 was the better Napa year.

"It's finally cool enough to ship wine" season has arrived at our house.

Two deliveries in the past two days-- from Six Mile Bridge and Adelaida.

This delivery schedule can NOT continue.

This weeks finds at Sam’s Club. ‘22 Bordeaux @ $12.97 and ‘20 Yountville Cabernet @ $16.97. Both very drinkable now with the Bordeaux being my fave. Very dry and earthy. One takes some risk in buying these four to six year old vintages at a warehouse as we don’t know how/where they’ve been stored. Have had two of the Bordeaux and one of the Napa Cab. Both very good.

Dinner last night. If anyone is ever in Asheville, NC, I highly recommend Luminosa, our current favorite restaurant here. $35 corkage on the high side for Asheville, but reasonable vs. some we find in South Florida. (The Tignanello was also excellent.)

What is everyone having for Thanksgiving wine?

We will be going out for our non-traditional Thanksgiving at Ruth's Chris (one of the only steakhouse and better restaurants open on Thanksgiving in Asheville), which is our tradition. I'm thinking we'll go with a 2019 Alpha Omega Stagecoach (Cabernet), which I have on hand here.

I may have to give Heitz another chance. I had a really good bottle a few years ago, then I bought another one that was a year younger that I thought was not very good. I want to say the 2017 was good and the '18 was not. A friend also told me the winery was sold, so that may have contributed to the change in quality (maybe only my perception).

Can't go wrong with a nice steak and some AO to go with it! We are also going out, but no corkage for this event. We did something similar to this on a cruise last summer, and it was fun and tasty.

I try to keep it simple on Thanksgiving, not least because it's so hard to pair with the traditional menu. We open the older reds for holidays like Christmas and NYE when we eat prime rib and rack of lamb.

Today I followed my usual (last several years) practice of a Beaujolais for a red (to go with Turkey/stuffing/gravy/etc) and a spat-or-sweeter riesling to go with sweet potatoes and similar.

My go-to Cru Beaujolais is Clos de la Roilette Fleurie Cuvée Tardive and we opened the 2013 today. 2003 J.J. Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Auslese *** for the riesling.

I have a one-off of a Jura vin de paille style dessert wine I've never tried before set aside for later with the pie. Good day without cracking into any of the heavy or serious reds.

I forgot earlier that I brought this (2018 Vineyard 29 Aida Estate) for Thanksgiving so we had this with our traditional, non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner and saved the AO for another time.
