Drivetrain malfunction in a F20 116I 2014
I have a BMW F20 116I 2014 (Petrol) with 1009.000 KM. I was traveling and about traveling 150km when I was overtaking a lorry I got the Drivetrain Malfunction continue at moderate speed with Engine light flashing. Ok, restarted the car and the same happened, then I thought ok, this time is serious. So finished my travel and drove to the nearest mechanic. He said that it was the Sparking Plugs and the Vanos solenoid, also changed the valve cover gasket. Ok went home then I put in the Sport mode and pressed the entire gas pedal. Drivetrain malfunction again without Engine light flashing. So I traveled back to my home and scanned the car and the following codes appeared.
P000C A camshaft position slow response bank 2 P000D B camshaft position slow response bank 2 P0070 Ambient Air temperature sensor malfunction P0071 Ambient sensor rationality check P0072 Ambient sensor circuit low P0073 Ambient sensor circuit high I guess that the interesting ones are the P000C and P000D. First I thought that was the ignition coils that weren't changed, but after the scan I've discarded since there are no Misfire code I've also discarded the High pressure fuel pump and the Injectors despite the petrol is known of being bad. I'm starting to think that it is the Timing chain, since I purchased this car from an used cars dealer I don't know if the timing chain was changed. When I turn on the (cold) car it kinda shakes a little bit when cold twice and take about half a second. But this only happened in the winter season. Anyone had these codes? especially the first ones? The error always happen when I put in the sport mode and push the car hard. |

2015 120i (N13) with only 49k km.
Just had the car serviced by BMW on a pre-paid 5-yr service plan to change spark plugs, plus other regular items (engine oil, filter etc.) I prefer to do my own oil changes each 10k km but this time let them do it. As soon as I drove the car from the service centre I instinctively felt the motor was down on power. Drove it home and the next day, after about 20 km, the DRIVETRAIN message popped up with "Possible to continue journey. Full performance not available.....". Used a basic OBD scanner and no error codes showed up. After restart the drivetrain message cleared but engine power was not restored. It popped up again after accelerating briskly. I felt strongly this problem was caused at the service centre. I searched online and among detailed descriptions of various fixes (VANOS solenoids, etc.) I found an advice to check that both vacuum lines under the engine cover were connected properly. Lifting the cover I found the rear vacuum line (close to firewall) not connected. Reconnecting the vacuum line fixed the problem. I dread to think what fix I would be charged for if I had to go back to the BMW Canterbury service centre. (3 photos attached). |

I took the car to a mechanic and they said that the two vaccuum lines were unplugged, not the same as yours but they didn't gave much details. Helped a little bit, but when I do a full gas pedal in Sport Mode the error pops I've changed the engine oil to Castrol, recommended one and nothing. I'm planning to replace the exhaust vanos and later clean my Injectors. Unfortunately I couldn't look the Timing Chain, but it must be one of these. If nothing works I'll return to the dealership and I'll purchase a new car.
Which app did you used to scan? |

I also had a drivetrain malfunction error a while ago on my 116i out 2014 with 194k kilometers. For me it was my timing chain, it was way too lose. Went to the mechanic and they fixed the timing chain set and everything went back to normal again.
