Leaking timing chain cover B38 1.5 F20
Hello there.
I have a 1.5 petrol BMW 1 series F20 2018 with 35k on the clock its only 7 days old. I purchased it from a car supermarket in the UK 7 days ago and they plan to have a look at it in 2 weeks after I reported this leak. I noticed a slight wet patch as per the pictures (red circle) which on feeling felt like oil. I probed around, cleaned the area a bit and found what feels to a very, very slow weep of oil from one the bolts from the timing chain cover at the bottom of the engine as per photo. As far as I can feel the other bolts feel fine. Would be grateful to know 1) Is this likely just to be a faulty cover , is it a big fix, could it be due to a serious cause apart from a faulty gasket? Have seen could cost up to 1K! 2) Are there any risks leaving it? 3) If the car supermarket tries to wriggle out any suggestion of arguments to use? As far as I am aware the car is not dropping oil, however have only had it for a short period of time and drives fine. Look forward to hearing thanks George Last edited by George121212; 07-17-2024 at 08:00 AM.. Reason: update photo |

For the guy up with that leak, it's still okay, if leaking more, replace.
Fixed mine, mandatory: Black RTV Silicone any brand. Brake Cleaner Spray Timing cover oe code: 11148512597 MOST IMPORTANT SPECIAL TOOL: 2357900 Why? Because otherwise the crankshaft seal will not fit properly on the crank, it's flexible and should stay in original position(heading inside engine) I have the special tool made DIY, if anyone from Europe needs, dm |

Hey, thanks so much for replying.
Actually just got my car back, the timing chain cover has been replaced alongside a new crankshaft seal. Had it reached under warranty. This seems to have worked and no more leaks. Your Reddit post is a good read thank you |
