Any gun is better then no gun in a bug out situation. Personally there are a lot of guns that would be higher on my list. Something a little more concealable/w/scope/common caliber. Nice old school gun though!

No. It has no parts commonality with something you might pickup on the way. Caliber is obscure so once you expend your ammo you cannot re-purpose someone elses. Once you use up your ammo you will be left with a nice walking stick/club. Bug out bags need to light. You need to be able to move with them. You want to a handgun not a rifle. IMHO. The concept is to be able to move quickly out of harms way fro 48-72 hours. From there you assess the situation scavenge to survive for a longer duration. Taking something with a finite usefulness is counter productive.

Bug out guns should be super practical in a common caliber. 9mm, 45 ACP, 40 S&W or even 22LR. You want something that can use someone else's ammo. mags and parts. For my money a Glock in 9mm is the best choice. If you have to bug out and live for any length of time on your own the chances of being able to find mags, ammo and parts to keep the gun running are higher with a Glock 19 or 17 than any other gun in the world.

Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers told me last year during a training course they were teaching that it is a Glock world. They train people all over the world and they see more Glock 19s and 17s than anything else.

That is what are in my bug out and get home bags. I shoot other guns better and enjoy shooting others more but for a SHTF gun you cannot beat a Glock.

Primary weapon should be a rifle. If you know you are going to a gun fight you dont bring a pistol. Pistol is secondary and then you back up, wheel gun maybe.

I semi-disagree.

I think rifles are great for distance, but in any apocalyptic-your-neighbor-is-coming-for-you scenario a pistol-like SBR would be best. Most "bug out"-"bug in" battles would be less than 50 yards.

not a gun guy but my friends took me out to range to teach me how to shoot. I must say, pretty intense and lot's of do's and don'ts when it comes to firearms. I believe this was a Springfield...not sure which model since they had a couple of these as well as a variety of Glocks

also was shooting a couple of AR's they had

Yeah I get that. Also am fond of a 870 pump. Depends if you are milling around or staying put barricaded against evil.

I was onto Battlefield Las Vegas and shot an AK-47 - and determined immedately that Im not longer be able to shot "heavier" calibers with buttstock pulled into my right shoulder
Since a bigger OP in my shoulder, where the surgeon had sawed off the connection between collarbone and upper arm joints the remaining collarbone snapped pushed by the blowback deep into my inner spaces and that had hurted like hell.
Well, I have to lower my shells to M4/M16 size or learn to shot left handed...

If you are bugging out weight is the number one issue. A bugout bag should be built around the concept that you will have to walk carrying it at a decent pace. In a bugout situation it is a grab the bag and go scenario and you have to assume you are going to be walking at some point. Strap on a 50 lb bag and walk around the neighborhood or local park. Most people will find that every pound makes a difference. Lighter is always better.

Also in a bug out situation avoidance of others is the primary goal not engaging in a fire fight. Your gun will still be a weapon of last resort. Yes a rifle is a superior weapon but add the weight of the gun and the ammo and it can quickly become a liability. If you are bugging in, sheltering and defending day your home, then without a doubt a rifle is the primary weapon. I don’t recommend revolvers for anymore because most people do not know how to reload them efficiently and you are at a major capacity deficit vs a modern wonder 9mm.

An AR pistol or 9mm SBR setup would be decent compromise but again for the avg person you are adding weight and compromising mobility. IMHO.

The P228 is my favorite Sig. W. German craftsmanship at its finest. Cut my teeth shooting the P228. I no longer carry it but it is still one of my favorite DA/SA guns.

A couple of buddies and I have found (not that it was hidden, we just had never gone) a really nice shooting range. We have been playing on the 100 yard rifle range.

The first time I brought out my 300 winmag that I rarely get to shoot, and my SCAR 17 (with really nice glass), we were also trying the get my buddies ARs dialed in. Great fun, I really love the SCAR 17.

The next time (yesterday), we brought a buddies nephew so I brought out some of my 'video game' guns, the SCAR, the Tavor, an AR with an EoTech and a magnifier, and the gun I wanted to play with...my Ruger 10/22 with a cheap scope.

As cool and interesting as the 'exotic' guns are, I had so much fun with that little ruger. I was very impressed with how it was grouping at 100 yards, I didn't have high hopes, I have always considered a .22 to be a 50 yard gun, I was wrong.

I liked it so much I ordered some bits for it, a couple new mags, a trigger kit (ruger BX was on sale) and a bipod adapter. I excited to get out a shoot for cheap!

Havent shot 3 gun but thought multiple rapid acquisition at relatively short range would fall to rds. Looks good.

That Vortex Razor scope is a high-end illuminated dot 1-6x scope, so it's effectively is a red dot when dialed back to 1x magnification. The eyebox while not as big as a rds; is huge on the Razor. That's a big reason I picked it over other LPVO on the market.

Not my pics but here is an example of what it looks like at 1x. (Yes the red dot is plenty bright even in the brightest conditions)
