Bye bye 330d .. Hello 135i?

So changing my job has changed my work commute from 150 miles a day, to 2. That is not a typo. This nicely times up with changing the 330d touring (end of company car lease). The 330d is an incredibly capable car and more than Suited to both the long journeys and short trips, but I'm fancying something "different"

Checking prices today I can get into a M135i for less money than my 330d Touring, which is a little suppressing giving the BIK rating for the 135.

But my concern is general size and boot capacity; 360/1200 for the M135i against 495/1500 for the 330d Touring.

Has anyone gone from a 1 series to a 3 touring? Or the other way around ? How did you find the size difference? I like the "space" that the driver has ... Is there the same space in a 1 series ?

I've got a 4 day tester coming next weekend so I should be able to determine this myself, but I suspect I'll be playing too much with those 320 horses.

Changes

I changed from e90 330d LCI (lovely car) to an X5 35d (good in very different way) to an M135i (great little car)

With the fold down seats of the M135i, the most space limited was the 330d. Can't say I really noticed any real different in space between the 3.....although the differences are significant. I would guess that dog owners and push chair conveyors would notice quite a difference, otherwise its not really significant in everyday use

The rear seats fold completely flat in the 1er so quite a practical and spacious load area

We are running my M135i and my wife's E91 320d.

Front compartment in the 1er is just that wee bit narrower. I don't find it claustrophobic in any way, and you only really notice the difference where the central armrest is. The rear seat is slightly narrower also - but 3 full size adults are uncomfortable in either due to the rear wheelarch intrusion. For 4 adults, unless two of them are 185cm or above, passenger space is pretty equal.

Both rear compartments fold flat easily, both are well shaped and neither has particularly obstructive wheelarches when loading. Its easier to stow the 3ers blind when not needed but it is a heavy thing - the light parcel shelf of the 1er is less hassle in some ways. Obviously there's more space in the 3er, added to by a useful under-floor compartment. Our family of 4 can go away for a week in the Touring, or just about squeeze luggage for an overseas trip (3 large, 1 medium suitcases, 4 large cabin bags) and 5 passengers. The 1er is only able to accommodate 3 people and their luggage in such situations unless you are prepared to cram things to the ceiling.

The 3er will transport 3 MTBs and 3 large adults with an overnight bag each. While the 1er will swallow those same 3 bikes and a similar amount of paraphernalia, you end up one passenger down.

I find the 1er just about as capacious as my previous E90 325i however, and vastly more flexible for loading bikes and large items.
