Problems starting the engine I get an indicator light

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi everyone, this is my first post here and I apologize in advance for my English…
Here is what happens.

Problems starting the engine I get an indicator light:

"Drivetrain.
Continue the journey at a moderate speed.
Full performance not available.
Have the problem checked by service. "

And the car shakes and sometimes turns itself off, but when I turn it on again immediately the car feels perfect.

This happens only when the car is about 6 hours with the engine off and no matter if it's hot or cold because the weather is usually at 30 to 38°C (86 to 100°F) in the morning in summer, and in winter about 8°C in the morning and sometimes below 0°C (46°F sometimes below 32°F)

The problem was rare before, but now it happens almost every morning which is annoying.
The dealer told me that this is normal and happens with some cars because of the "high performance of the engine" (not my words) hehe, so they reprogrammed the computer but the car is still with the same problem.

I always use premium gasoline which here in Mexico is 92 octanes.

The car is a 118i Urban, here are some pictures of what appears on idrive screen.

Could have something to do with fuel pressure. If the cars sits for a couple of hours, fuel flows back to the tank and the supply pump needs to build up pressure again. Perhaps it's failing. Listen if you can hear it buzz before starting the car.

I could also be a leaky injector, fuel leaks in the cylinder, causing both the fuel pressure to drop and the engine to 'drown'.

But really... the dealership should figure that out for you. It's definitely not normal! What does their computer say?

Good luck,
- Rick

Definetely NOT NORMAL!! The dealer should plug it in the diagnostics and read the error. Do not let them get away this easy.

wow, what a clueless dealer. I would recommend you to go to another dealer. If that's not possible you better go back and demand that they handle this issue properly, before something is seriously damaged. This is absolutely not normal and I would not be comfortable driving the car with this fault.

The 118i is an Efficient Dynamics engine, and by no means a high performance engine. The dealer should be able to read the actual fault codes and fix the problem.

+1

It could be a faulty fuel sensor or an issue in the EMS/mapping not set for 92 octane or lower octane fuel management
Can you get access to 98 octane fuel to rule out a fuel issue.

The American 92 octane is pretty much similar to Euro 98 octane.
My 116i calls for 91-98 octane (probably something like 87-92 in America), and I doubt the 118i is any different.

thank you all for your answers, I have been monitoring the behavior of the car and I think the problem is in the exhaust gas as it says "ilkercgs"
And with respect to gasoline, I think that's not the problem because I know other people with BMWs and have had no problems with the fuel type offered here in Mexico.

I'm definitely having a bittersweet experience with my 118i.

At the end is another capture of other problem I'm having that was supposed to be resolved with the reprogramming of the computer ...

I say this because I just take the car to its 10,000 km service and i assume that they should review all of the fluid levels of the car (coolant included)

this problem does not repeat as much as the other but still is something that makes me uncomfortable, especially because of the "risk of engine damage" part

by the moment I've been using my old peuogeot to avoid damaging the bimmer until I have the time to enforce the dealer a reasonable response ...

yes, there is definitely a buzz sound when pressing the button to unlock the doors and they have not told me what the computer tells them

The Coolant problem, is a known issue of the F20 with petrol engines. BMW will change the expansion bottle, coolant level sensor and coolant for free, all as warranty work. you should go to your dealer and ask them for that. It is a know problem.

I had the "Drivetrain" and "Coolant" error too. Drivetrain can basically mean alot of things in the engine bay all the way to the exhaust. For my case, I had the Boost, Manifold & Temperature sensor replaced.

Premium car with premium problems indeed!

Last week I started getting this drivetrain fault. They did diagnostics and told me they have to do a software update. Didnt find any engine damage. They already replaced my expansion bottle and sensor ad a preventive meassure. Is this another BMW recall? Itd getting frustrating. :-(

"Drivetrain" and "Coolant" combo here. They already knew each of the problems when I came since it already happened to a few F20s.

Fixed, but it took a few days before they got parts. I could test some other BMWs under repair so I don't complain.
