Daily driving engine speed

Hello all,

I have a 116i 2013, automatic. Wondering which gear and which rpm you use for daily driving.

If I use "comfort", the engine speed almost never goes above 2000. If I drive like this for a while, the engine starts to run badly. Have therefore started pulling the gear lever to the left to use sport mode when shifting. The engine then never runs below 2000.

I think this is better for the engine. But what do the rest of you do?

Regards

What do you mean by 'run badly'?

Harsh in the sound and tendencies to knock. I think there will be a lot of soot in the engine and on the valves.

Have you tried any cleaning products such as Injector cleaners or, if you can get it, Cataclean?

Also how old is your MAF sensor and O2 sensors?
Does the engine oil smell strongly of petrol?
When was the car serviced including new plugs?

When i bought my 2014 116i in March, the tailpipe was very, very sooty - like a 20year old diesel's and fuel consumption was poor.

I replaced the MAF and O2 sensor and now have a clean tailpipe, and much lower consumption, with no running problems at all.

The sensors you mention have never been replaced. The engine does not smell of petrol, and it actually runs quite well, but the sound is a bit harsh. Service is taken every year according to the book. But the exhaust pipe is very dirty.

I personally would replace the maf sensor first as it is an easy diy job and also clean up the tailpipe so you can more easily see if it is still running rich.

The pre cat O2 sensor is usually due for changing at 100k miles / 160k Km.

I buy my parts from Germany - www.buycarparts.co.uk (autodoc) as they have a good selection of parts for all vehicles.

They also stock the O2 sensor and the 22mm removal socket. It's easy to get to - just in front of the oil filter.

(It's rare for either sensor to produce fault codes unless they are way out of spec, so don't wait for this to happen)
