Hi LatinBimmer,
I have just purchased a Y-Cable (waiting for it to arrive) and will be using this through the lightning adapter to an iPhone5. I dont have the answer to your question, but i was hoping you could help with this question that i have? Have you tried this on an iPhone 4, as do you need any BMW iDrive options to be able to see album artwork? I have just the standard iDrive system on an m-sport and was wondering how different the interface would be to that when i use a USB stick loaded with music (as i dont get album artwork with that since i dont have the thumbnails on the drive). Thanks |

I solved my question using the original apple lightning to usb cable. Now everything works perfect: Office, Music and Album Art So, the famous Y cable is no longer needed !!!! Let me try with my wife's iPhone 4 |

Thats good to know, i might try this - then return the y-cable if its not needed. Do you need any iDrive options to get album artwork from the iPhone?
Thanks |

I've connected a 5th gen iPod Nano via the original Apple USB cable, and all works fine - browsing music (artists, playlist, songs, genre, composer etc), and album artwork is displayed.

I tried my iPhone 5 apple usb to lightning lead last night, direct into the USB under the armrest - but it still says unsupported device. Hopefully my Y cable will arrive today and then i can test it with that. regular USB sticks work fine tho, any ideas why it works on yours and not mine?

Hopefully my y-lead will turn up soon, can anyone confirm whether this works with a lightning to 30 pin adapter on the end, but with just the standard iDrive system? Thanks |

Hi!
Apologies to dig out this thread but I just could not find a straight answer to some doubts... I'm going to receive my F20 by late October, am completely new to iDrive, and didn't order the snap in adapter for my iphone 5. I read a lot about issues when it was launched out last year with the lightning cable and I'm wondering if I'll need a specific BMW's y-cable to be able to connect and listen to the music from my phone. Will an Apple usb-lightning cable suffice? Will I get music control from the iDrive with it as well as the album covers displayed? Thanks.

You don't need the snap in adapter; you can just connect via BT. Album art display requires the extended BT option, even if connecting by USB. USB connection just needs the standard Apple lightning to USB cable

"Album art display requires the extended BT option, even if connecting by USB."
Does this mean I won't get album art display with the options I have chosen?
