...when you attend a graveside service and there are not enough chairs for all the guest. My wife and I stand around to give the chairs few remaining chairs to the older guests. All the other standing guests gesture to my wife and me to sit down in the precious remaining chairs. I look at her and she looks at me, we both look at the guests and realize that WE are the old guests everyone was waiting to give the remaining seats to. A bit depressing, but at least we are still above ground.

Don't dread it. It's the best part!

Stay fit and keep loading up your 401k or other retirement vehicle so you can retire at a reasonable age and in good health.

My wife and I are having the time of our life! We know people who are 1/2 our age and think they are over the hill and act like it. Sad really.

20 years from now post on this forum and tell everyone how right I was back then. I may even respond if I'm not out climbing a mountain or traveling to some exotic island.

I'm planning to hang up the duty belt and turn in the badge and duty gun by 59.

Good for you. Embrace each year. Getting old is something you get to do if you are lucky. With health, enough money, and all the knowledge you've accumulated (and will continue to accumulate), you won't believe how fun retirement can be. For example: I'm headed to Alaska next week to go halibut and salmon fishing. We are fishing for 4 days but staying three more days just because we can. No hurry, no worries, no in basket to clear. I just have to be back in time to go on my week-long hiking trip in the Sierra.

Better get your plot while there's still some room.

You kneel down to see the front panel on the NAS box in the bottom of the rack, and end up with spinal x-rays, a brace, 4 prescriptions, and a workers comp case

Oof! Time to rearrange the rack. Maybe get someone younger to do it.

I always place UPS units and batteries in the bottom of every rack when I build one...and we don't even have to deal with earthquakes where keeping the heaviest mass close to the floor is a consideration.....

This is just a 2-post rack. All the others have the UPS fill the bottom third. Although that, when it comes time to change battery packs, has it's own issues.

The NAS just sits on the bottom attachment to the floor, so it's TECHNICALLY off the ground in case of water intrusion.

I wasn't involved in the purchase of said NAS. But when the kind gentleman with a gun on his waist said I needed these items connected to the network, I did as asked. We have a racked replacement, but the thought of moving GIGs of data using xcopy32, to maintain names and rights, is daunting.

Ah, this why retirement is so sweet.

Although having said that, yesterday I had to use some old contacts at the university to help fix an email issue Wifey was having and today the FIL called because he's having problems logging into his laptop. So the struggle continues.

One of the items on my ever-increasing task list was to replace the sealed batteries in our APC UPS backup battery units at our university. Some of those backup units were big. Occasionally, the sealed lead-acid batteries would swell up, making them difficult to remove from the case. There were many times I had to drill out the rivets in the steel frame to get the batteries out.

On one memorable occasion, I had to make a special extraction tool to help a fellow remove some swollen batteries while the units were still in a steel rack. The batteries had swollen so much, we couldn't get the APC units out of the tight-fitting rack. Heh!

Ask me why I don't have an APC-brand *anything* in my house, and why I now let the junior staff change the batteries at work? At least two of them have caused non-trivial injuries to me...one by exploding in a plasma ball and the other by shorting out and burning three of my fingers bad enough to need medical treatment.....
