125d or 140i?

Now that like us all I have a lot more time on my hands I’ve been thinking about changing the car and have two in mind a 125d or a 140i. Now I know the 140 is a very different beast to the 125 but I do about 3000 miles a month so running costs have to be a factor.
By my rough calculations the 140 will cost me about €230 more in fuel per month but I know the driving experience would be far better.
My question is, is the 125d any fun? In my mind a 125d with a good remap would be a good compromise but I’m not sure.
I’ve had some fast and fun cars before and am now driving a 730d which is just lovely but a bit dull, I want something more fun again.
Any opinion on either would be greatly appreciated.

AFAIK, there's no such thing as 140i. M140i is the top model so if you can afford it and obtain it in decent condition (good value) you don't need to compromise, of course. This simple.

Here's a story for you (second hand as I haven't seen GeoBem007 here for quite a while ):

I have a 118i, and I sometimes think I should have bought the M140i instead, just because of the better engine sound. I never think I should have had a 125d.

I've got the M140i, since december 2016 (one of the first here in Italy), before I had a 120d, and it was perfect......but the M140i is something that cannot be compared (in a better way) to a 4 pot diesel......

Personally I would go for the M140i..much better sound (especially pre-OPF) and more fun to drive! Have you chosen yet? Interested to know!

I got the replies I expected, a M140i is a completely different car to a 125d. I had made my mind up and started to research 140’s but then the Covid-19 hit and like a lot of people my financial situation just got a lot worse. So now I’m thinking of a 125d and a good remap might be a solution for the moment. I’ve to try to sell my 730d first though and I reckon car sales won’t be great for the foreseeable future!

No...you ouldmakebig mistake IMHO.

In the next few months you'll find some M140s at an even lower price.

Do not go for the diesel........remember that it's the last inline 6 engined car.....don't miss the occasion to won one of them.

Off course, I really understand the financial situation (I do, believe me) but there's not such a big price difference between an aseptic (even sportier) diesel and a wonderful inline 6 gasoline unit. No way to compare the driving pleasure the M140i gives you. As I told you before, before owning the M140i I had a 120d, and it was such a good car.....but didn't made me smile as the 140 always does, especially after installing the M perf. rear locking differential. Mine in pure RWD.... far away more entertaining and engaging and fun as a purist petrolhead.

Did you consider a 330E?

They are quite quick whilst there's charge in the battery and zero emissions in town.

► Up to 41 miles of battery-only range
► Up to 289bhp, 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds

Not for me thanks. Small boot and I couldn’t be arsed with a charger at home.
