***Official Bimmerpost Photo Contest #11: Depth of Field***

RULES
-Any interpretation of the theme that falls within Bimmerpost.com rules is welcome.
-You must be the person that took the photo. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image.
-One submission per contest.
-Images must be no larger than 800px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 800px for the poll.
-All contestants must host their own pictures.
-All pictures must have a title.
-While post processing in Photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photochopped," the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture.

I am sure most of you have a general idea about depth of focus, but here is some info I found just so we are all on the same page:
Depth of Field is the amount of your image before and beyond your focus point that will be in focus. In subjects such as landscapes, a large depth of field is often desired so that the entire scene appears to be in focus. With subjects such as portraits, a small depth of field is often used to blur the background and reduce distractions from the main subject of the image.

Important dates and poll info: Entries must be submitted to this thread no later than Tuesday, June 16th at MIDNIGHT EST.

The poll will start the following day, June 17th.

So I guess there is going to be two basic camps: Extremely shallow DOF and extremely deep DOF. Which one to choose...... Well, since my mid-grade lens can only manage 3.5 to 5.6 at the wide open end, I'm guessing I'll be going for extremely deep DOF....

Works with most things that don't involve moving vehicles.

I took this with my f4L 70-200 IS with a 25mm extension tube, detailing the stitching. Since I can only show one picture in the contest, I elected not to show the shot from the same position showing the "M" in focus and the stitching out of focus. I think this one shows the DOF concept without further explaination, but together they make the concept crystal clear.

I really like this theme. People can post a variety of pictures yet they still fit the theme. A very good choice!! Now if only I know what to shoot...

I agree, this turned out to be a great theme. The shots so far are all totally different, but all valid and all with winning potential. I suspect that we'll have a ton to chose from by the voting date.

This pictures looks familiar...have you posted it on the forums before? I really like the clarity of the wood contrasted to the blurred ocean. Well done!

Great shots everyone, keep em coming!!!

Almost every macro shot I take has way narrow DOF. Here's one from last week:

Are you using a dedicated macro lens or an extension tube? If lens, which lens?

Stunning shot btw, I love the eye(s) detail and translucence of the eyes, along with the rich yet subtle colors.

Dave
I use a Canon 65mm MPE lens that only works at macro ranges. Kind of a PITA to use, but it works a lot better at high magnification than anything else I've tried.
