Glovebox USB socket & iPod

Excuse my newb qn -- probably been answered before -- but is it possible to hook an iPod up to the USB port in the glovebox, rather than the one under the centre armrest?

I have a 60Gb iPod, which works fine just plugging the std Apple cable into the centre console USB (no BMW cable needed) but nothing happens when I plug it into the one in the glovebox

The manual seems ambiguous or at least unclear on this point.

AFAIK, no the usb in the glovebox does not work with an ipod.

There is no USB socket in my glovebox. Is this another BMW option?...
