Its makes sense that a new engine has increased fuel consumption during break in period...
This is known to drivers/owners changing cars pretty often. In the case of the OP that drives short distances its also even more intense. From experience , you will notice consumption reduction (to the usual levels) by the 8k km onwards and improvement on driveability/engine's response from 10-11k onwards. |
