BMWNA probably figures that there are not that many people who would pay close to M2 money for a hot hatch. The only car segment that's selling well in the US is SAV's and SUV's.
Base price for a M140i xDrive is 49.400 euros before any options. German prices for the 1er... https://www.bmw.de/dam/brandBM/marke...5609872002.pdf

I'd rather have a coupe or a sedan. Not something that looks like a small station wagon. If I was going for that look, I'd rather have an SUV with more ground clearance and storage.

The M240 in UK is almost 36k UK Pound Sells for 44k in the US The M140 in UK is 31,800 UK Pound which would put it into a price range of the VW R......which it would blow out of the water....and have more interior room Its smaller brother with a B46 would blow the GTI out of the water as well as the Mini.....which is more likely the issue |

Is M140 x-drive? Golf R is AWD, about the same speed and probably better fuel economy. Also looks like the BMW will be more cramped in the rear.

I know it is on the 2 but was trying to understand more of an apples to apples price comparison to the Golf R.

The M140 would list for 40-41k USD Personally I would much prefer the rear wheel bias of the BWM X-Drive over the Haldex AWD VW R.....if only they would offer the Bimmer with a 6MT in combination with XDrive..... |

I find it really hard to believe BMW would sell it for that low in the US. A fully loaded 135is was $51k MSRP back in 2013. This would be four doors and AWD. An M240i xdrive35i loaded up is about $52k. So I'd guess, it would be closer to $50k.

I really hope BMW does bring this car in the US, not in Xdrive only version.
Perhaps they could price the M140i at the mid to high 30s naked (no nav, no x-drive), to compete with the STi, Golf R folks, with a touch of extra comfort. Although I think the 2 series has nice proportions, I'd much rather have the extra 2 doors without having to get a bulky SUV. Right now, I don't think BMW has any expansion plans given that the sales are tanking. They have to figure out what is going on with their current cars first. *ahem horrible lease deals ahem* |

The next generation F40 1 Series will move to the FWD UKL platform. This means that the M140i will go away - replaced by an M135i with a high output version of the B48 4 cylinder engine and a Haldex AWD system. In that regard, the car will be very similar to an S3 Sportback or Mercedes A Class (though Mercedes curiously offers no ~300hp version of that car - only ~200hp and ~400hp). Note that those cars are not offered in the US either (well, except the e-tron A3). It remains to be seen if BMW intends to offer a four or five door car smaller than a 3 Series in the US. A 2 Series Gran Coupe is possible, although with the merging of the Gran Coupe and Gran Turismo models under the 4 and 6 Series umbrellas, a 2 Series GC looks even less likely now (there is already a 2 Series GT on UKL). It is still possible that the 1 Series sedan will eventually make its way to the US, but that car is not necessarily exciting (even in the upcoming M135i guise). With the rapid growth of SUVs and decline in passenger car sales in the US, BMW may be planning to just go with the X1 and X2 as their entry level vehicles here. |

Pisses me off that because the bloody americans don't buy wagons, we get lumped into the same group for here in Canada. We love our wagons! I would love to have a manual hot little wagon.

hatchbacks got that bash maybe because of honda brappers (the school guy who has a 10k budget but spends half of that in tuning and half in an old car) If BMW is going full blown FWD based AWD hatchback, then I just rather take the Golf R instead. It's such a fine ride, under 40k new and 292 horses. If they do offer the 2 series gran coupe, I do wish it comes in manual transmission, 6 cylinders and RWD (6MT not offered in the 4 series GC). |

Although they don't offer the A series in the US, they offer the GLA suv with the A45 setup. Personally, that "suv" actually sits as high as my 2 series and I would classify that more of a hatchback than a suv.

The general rule is that when it comes to premium automobiles, Americans prefer a five door SUV to a five door traditional passenger car. In other words hatchbacks tend to have a low budget stigma attached to them. I should add that exception is coupe-ish hatchbacks like an A7 or 4 Series GC. But those don't offer the same space efficiency as a typical two-box hatchback. Quote:
The key here is to acknowledge the fact that if manufacturers simply took existing SUVs on the market and made them a little lower, that would not suddenly negate the demand for true hatchbacks. Even if I take a Cayenne, chop it, channel it, and drop it to the ground, I didn't just out Panamera the Panamera. In fact, in many ways I've bastardized the SUV to the point that I now have neither a useful truck nor particularly sporty car. That said, it is true that a true X2 M would be an interesting model if BMW were to offer it. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any plans for a model above the X2 M35i. Sure, it'll likely be fun, but a true GLA45 and Q3 RS competitor would be even better. |

This car would be the one to finally get my dad into a BMW. Poor guy can barely get into my F30 because it sits too low for his stature, and my car is stock height at the moment.
He loves his hatchbacks tho...sadly it doesn't look like BMW N/A plans to appease his demographic anytime soon.

They offered this with a 6MT? Most I saw had the ZF8 (which was pretty quick).
