I remember when I need 2p to use a phone box in order to ring home (from school)
we used to cheat it, ring the operator, say we put money in and lost it, they would put us through. Having to wait to go home. To ring a friend, but asking parents permission first to use the phone (rotary phone) Having to wait 7 days to get photo's developed to see what came out having to wait a month for super8 films to be developed, then pulling out the screen and projector and NO SOUND remember watching an old b/w b movie a scary one, about 10 minutes long on super8, with NO SOUND being a field engineer, communicating with the office from site only, as we never had mobile phones my God HOW DID WE MANAGE with out social media, email, and iphones |

Yes, but OP is super duper concerned about the privacy of his emails. And since everyone nearby can see and read the smoke signal and hear you yelling, instead of just the intended recipient....I felt carrier pigeons afforded him better privacy.

It's a little weird when you think the police have to get a court order to tap a telephone line but our cell cameras and mics are almost considered public.

The only way it is accessed is if it hacked into... which is not very easy for someone to do. Old loopholes were patched since being discovered. Unless you happen to have a very old phone that is no longer updated.

I used to think the whole "my phone/facebook/tablet/etc. is listening to me was bogus until last week. I have a motorcycle on order from my local Honda dealer. My wife and I were talking about it this weekend; as of Sunday night she's now getting targeted ads for motorcycles, riding gear, etc. on Facebook. Super creepy.

Well, the nothing to hide argument is used to break down the privacy debate. Not caring helps with that too.

Not a lot of thought in it - just a gut reaction. I don't really care if someone knows what beer or shoes I like.

We are talking about private corporations using software that you can chose to use or not use, not the government surveilling? without any choice. You can easily just stop using google and gmail if you care that much and take an alternate route as you do. For the government stuff it is a different beast all together.

You allow total strangers to know more about you than your own wife does. I imagine that if your wife had any idea how speak about her....and your ex, you would no longer be referring to her as your wife.

That 'nothing to hide' thing sounds great, until you look someplace that does not have privacy protections. Then surveillance and loss of privacy becomes a vicious tool of oppression. We have enjoyed the benefits of these freedoms for so long that we have not lived the horror of being w/o them, and it gets easy to take them for granted. Same goes for all those saying 'bill of rights only protects criminals'. to paraphrase an old saying: the Czecks registered their guns, and the Germans got rid of all that red tape and put a man of action in charge. Surprised nobody takes more offense at the government snooping, 9/11 or not.

She did accompany me bike shopping to several dealers so I'm wondering if it's GPS showing she went to 3 different motorcycle dealers in a couple hours on one day? In any event, it's creepy! |

Google has admitted that they screen emails. They also have admitted that if certain things like child pornography are detected, the email and user get flagged.

Its a fact that Google is grabbing all kind of data of the users. And this is one of the biggest disadvantages ever. Our company changed OS from XP to 7 and since that happens, all 3rd party programs to synchronize Outlook with android phones are banned.
So after buying a new phone I had to convert my adressbook to upload it at Googles to re-download it afterwards onto my new phone. Guess what? Within seconds I got tons of unwanted infos who of my contacts is playing this or that game, if we want to got matched together and so on. That was the first time, Google made me a little fear...
