MANN Filter vs BMW Original Filter / Shell Helix vs BMW TwinTurbo Oil
Hello everyone,
I will do 100,000 maintenance on my vehicle. I'll change the oil, pollen and air filters. There is a price difference of almost 60% between the Mann Filter and the BMW Original Part. Is there a difference in quality? Also, as an oil brand, is there any difference between Shell and TwinTurbo? Thank u so much. |

Hello,
There are endless speculations on this subject. Regarding parts it looks like you play the safest with originals but they are overly expensive. Regarding accessories, originals (often?) don't look competitive. Back to parts. They should be somewhat better than those "the same in a different package" but nowhere 60%, of course. So I would say if you can afford paying extra for even a minor advantage, buy parts from BMW, if money matters, save it. Just follow the manual for the oil requirements must have! I wouldn't save on the oil though (if it's an option at all). Also, saving may cause expenses: for example, "not so good" spark plugs would reduce the (more expensive) ignition coils' lifespan, they say. "Choose wisely." Also, using non-original parts/oil void your warranty or recall (whatever they are called) actions eligibility (even when the warranty has expired): regarding related parts/issues only, not all of the car at once, they say. |

It looks like BMW uses different manufacturers, Valeo for the cabin filter in particular. The cabin filter should be the most expensive in the set. I looked up the price: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/bmw/1-...lier%5B0%5D=21 (skip vehicle re-selection pop up), https://www.amazon.com/Activated-Car.../dp/B00DZLJM6O (converted it into your currency to compare). They must add some gold into it to justify the difference! And it's no cheaper in my area either. By the way, there are also different cabin filter technologies available. You compare correctly, "activated carbon filter" in both cases. Just notice that there's even a better technology available ("activated carbon filter with polyphenol", "with antibacterial action" ) in case you need it: https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/e...00000000148600). When I had my car serviced last summer there was a gift, wiper blades(?), offered by BMW with that "super" cabin filter, but it wasn't in stock. The Mann version of the "super" filter is quite more expensive than Valeo at the UK merchant referenced above: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/bmw/1-...lier%5B0%5D=21 (skip vehicle re-selection pop up). |

Just as I wrote already, I'd rather skip saving on oil. If you kill the engine, can you skip the BMW repair price as well? Or choose the most similar from the current BMW's supplier, Shell (right?). Always follow the non-OEM (I recall there is something about non-BMW oils allowed there) oil requirements in the manual, of course!
