f20 - Wheel size change
Hello,
I recently purchased an f20 2012 and I have a huge sound when entering my basement garage. I've looked into some ways to increase ground clearance and the easiest way seems to change the tire size. The stock is 205/55 R16 and I want to go to 215/60 R16. I know this will slightly mess with the speedometer, but my question is: did anyone try different wheel sized and what would be the other issues? |

The largest OEM wheels allowed/recommended seem to be 225/35 R19. According to a wheel calculator their overall diameter is about 640 mm (the exact value depends on the exact tire slightly) . According to the manual it's the limit: snow chains are not allowed on rim sizes over 17. Your choice of 215/60 R16 looks much larger: 664 mm, so it should be not a safe option (rubbing!) if an option at all. Other possible concerns can be rim fitting and softer handling, I guess.
Regarding other options. Drive more carefully. Sport suspensions are firmer but lower, so not an option. I don't know about any third party higher suspensions but even if they exist, they must affect handling severely, so not an option either. Consider larger wheels within the limit, mind the tire pressure or turn to firmer runflat tires (unless you have them already), but mind some hate them while I don't. |
