Lug Bolt Torque Confusion
Hi Guys,
I'm going to be fitting the summer Alloys back on this weekend - not only will the car look smarter, it should be able to handle the 120d's grunt abit better; did < 50 miles in them before taking them off tho so abit of running in to be done i think! Im just looking for some advice about lug bolt torque. When fitting the Winter Alloys last year, i was told by my dealer to use 140Nm and that was also mirrored by Ovekvam's post when i saw it later on here. I was trying to find this post yesterday as i had stupidly not made a note of the torque and wanted to ensure the bolts wen't on to the specified Torque. My forum search came back with a sea of results regarding the torque gauges on the iDrive and other unrelated posts as i forgot the wording of the original post. I always remember the value for our Leon as 120Nm (daft really since that ones printed in the manual - silly BMW) and had remembered the F20 was different. So i picked up the phone and called my dealer only to be told the F20 is also 120Nm, confused i then spoke to another local dealer only to be told the same. So what do you guys use: 140 or 120Nm, or does it not really matter? Obviously if they aren't tight enough they can come loose, and if they are too tight you can stretch the thread on the bolt and fatigue the bolt... Any views would be greatly appreciated and sorry for the late plea for help |

The F20 uses 14mm bolts, unlike the older BMWs that used 12mm. That is why they should have 140 Nm. It is also specified by BMW, but many dealers haven't noticed.

BMW has their own documents with all specified torques for the car. There are also general indexes for what torque to use based on bolt dimension, hardness and tread steepness. Like this one:
