low cost looks
I was talking to friend the other day about the new 1er coming out. From the sneak peaks it looks very similar to the existing version (9bars v 8 bars in the grill). I showed him the pictures of the 1ers that have had the 2er front fitted and that it was a very expensive job to get that look.
He is a graphics guy who also designs replacement decals for the old 70's muscle cars. He pointed out that decals were used to dress up those high performance cars to set them apart from the base models. Now Vinyl wrap is being used to make a car look different, mask or highlight certain aspects on a car. He cut these from a picture of the 2ers lights and fixed them on my 1er to show me what he was talking about. I was surprised that these bits of vinyl could change the look. I do like that the lights and grill are now accentuated and it gives the front a slightly more aggressive look. Just goes to show what a few dollars of vinyl sign film can achieve. What are your thoughts? Last edited by AusF20/F48; 07-19-2014 at 02:12 AM.. |

Looks pretty good.
The front bumper will look a lot more like the 2 series in the facelifted version, as far as I can see from the prototype pictures. |

Not bad at all!
Took a second before I could see it. Goes to show how well it works and brings out the headlights and bumper quite nicely. Can I have some? ;-) |

They are made from one piece of mid grey and one piece of black vinyl used to make car stickers (8 to 10 year life) and a piece of 6mm chrome pinstripe. You can get this from any graphics shop.
If you make a template to mimic the shape of the 2ers light front corner then cut out the black then apply the grey slightly smaller leading edge and fix. finally fix the pin stipe to cover the bottom edge of the grey. |

Guys just curious do you really hate the front of your cars? I think the f20 looks much better in real life. Its not a stunner but its not as bad as some people make it out to be. Not sure why you would want the 1 to look like the 2 I would prefer it to be different. I think they will update the f20 with the 2 series front however. There must be money to be made for people wanting a conversion

I think the 1 face looks better than the 2 they will all date in 2-3 years and BMW will always won't you to think their will be a better looker around the corner. the 1 looks open and fresh where is the 2 is going back in time. 99% of the public won't even know the difference.

Based on my personal taste, on a scale from 0-10, I would rank the fronts like this:
1-series without M-Sport: 3 1-series with M-Sport: 7 2-series with M-Sport: 9 |

Don't get me wrong here
I like the 1er M Sport look, however, I am growing to like the embellishment. I think I will keep it. the points make the nose stand out more and that gives mine a different look. |

Vinyl can go a long ways, in terms of changing up the looks of the car for minimal costs/time involved. I have had customers who brought in their brand new cars to them, and they felt like they were getting back a completely different and new car after some vinyl work was done to their cars.

I like the "bucktooth" action that's going on. If a car looks too "perfect" I lose interest. The 1er-front looks different to me everytime I look at it.

The good thing is that you can easily spot another BMW whilst driving around. Most of the new hatchbacks all looks like each other until you get close enough to see the badge. |
